I made this sign out of some 1" Gator Foam I already had in stock. It is a 18" x 40" indoor sign with letters I used a RotoZip to cut. I also put 4 gemini pads on the back to stud mount it. Cash and carry job.

$250 would be $50 a sq. but that sounds a little cheap to me. [I Don t Know]

You still paid for the material, so just because you had it in stock, you should not discount it. You should check how much it would cost to replace it in your stock today and use that as your material cost.

Add in cost of paint, primer, sandpaper, rotozip bit and whatever else is a consumable. Mark up the materials to what you need.

Count your time and multiply it by your shop rate.

That's how much you HAVE to get. If you can get more because of it's advertising value, or because the market price is higer, then push for more than that. Magazines, newspapers, the yellow pages, and TV get way more for advertising than what it costs plus a little markup and paying for their hours.

I'd be shooting for $450-600.

Hiya Blake,
If the client was happy and you made money, your price was right [Smile]
Dimensional signage is very difficult to sell by the square foot. But, I do qualify my potential clients by estimating a square foot price.
I normally estimate about $85 sq. ft. for sandblasted and $125 for carved and go up from there. Since this is an interior job made with interior materials I would estimate between $65 and $75 a square foot.
With that being said, my hourly rate and our methods of production are probably different. So, ultimately, your hourly rate would be your minimum determining factor on your price and profitability. If it took you 4 hours to build and $20 in materials, your minimum price should be about $230, assuming that your rate is $50 per hour.

Havin' fun,

Checkers

$90 to $100 per square would not be unreasonable.

btw, Checkers, how much do you charge for the second side of the sandblasted signs; do you give a discount since the material is already there, even though thicker than one-sided?
