This is a helmet I just finished...The customer wanted the whole helmet to represent the head of a T-Rex, for me this was a bit of a Challenge since the shapes are so much different, and of course visor he wanted it to be the mouth.. after looking at Photos on line this is what I came up with.... The helmet was a brand new Girls helmet with flowers and Vines. There's so much work that goes in doing this right they are hardly worth doing... First I have to take it apart, tape everything that won't be painted, then scuff with 1500 water paper, degrease, then Paint black, then I give it a couple of coats of clear, then watersand again, then you do the artwork, then clear again, but I think it came out pretty good... there's always room for improvement, but How much time can you spend on something like this? You have to make money!

Nice work Neil, was wondering did you put the window vinyl on the shield or is that the way you can buy them these days? If it was on originally how did you protect the shield that you see through? I just thinking you painted and then added it to the shield after.

Thanks, Pat I just cut the Vision Vinyl to shape first and then just laid it in place with 2 way tape, on top of the masking which protected the visor, once that was done and all the paintwork, I untaped everything including the visor and then applied the vision vinyl right on the Lens, using Rapid Tac to clean and then I applied the optically clear laminate over that. The customer loved it, sorry about the poor quality Photos they always look so blurry....
The colors I used were Pagan Gold and root beer Brown HOK Candies as well as Black and White, I was really happy how the colors worked out.

Thanks for that Neil, was wondering whether you used HOK...My only comment is I would have used a reptile style eye instead of the whale style, but then again not sure here what the client wanted so I'll keep quite now...Nice work on a challenging substrate.

Yes I agree on the eye, but I've seen them done that way as well, I really should have used the reptile all the same, more sinister looking....but hindsight is 20/20.

I use to do all that stuff too. Still have all my paints too, but life is just too short to spend that amount of time on something that always takes more time to do than you get paid for. All my best airbrush work in my old portfolio looks great, but I seems like all those jobs didn't pay for what it was truly worth. Looks good Neil, always good to see your work.

I forgot to mention that I used an Adhesion Promoter on the helmet before any paint was applied, it's an automotive product thats used on plastic Car parts, man does it ever work well...
Yes John, I was listening to an Airbrusher on the Radio just the other day, he specializes in Pro Hockey Masks... he said that his paintwork starts at $1500 and can go to $3500... I don't doubt him at all. Thanks for the compliment!

Thanks for the kudos, When I first started this I was asking myself why? Why? Why? lol, yes there are ways I could have simplified it but I said to myself, "Well... I'm Painting, and I am getting paid somewhat, so might as well enjoy it."

Tough job, well-done! Just thinking about how to do it would add a lot to the bill!
