Jill's post reminded me of something I've been working on:
The fish is from a photograph, and I used a sharpie and some pigment pens to render it. The little jig isn't my favorite, but the customer seems to like it. I should have posted this here much earlier, because I always get such great feedback.
My mind wanders. And that's not a good thing, 'cause it's too small to be out there alone. Posts: 3129 | From: Tooele, UT | Registered: Mar 2005

The only thing I might move would be the jig over in front of the mouth and make it part of the center illustration instead of an icon added to the lettering area.

Well done. I agree with Michael. You can tweak the positioning however you want but the jig should be part of the illustration, something like this.

Michael and David, I agree it would look more dynamic to have the jig in front of the fish. I did try putting there when I was discussing things with the client. The problem is, a jig works on the bottom, under the water. To show it in front of the fish would make it look like the fish is jumping out of the water for the jig - something it wouldn't do.
I don't know enough about walleye fishing to know what they naturally eat, and what they might jump out of the water to get. I fish for trout on a fly rod, so I'm not familiar with this walleyed beast. The customer didn't offer any suggestions when we were talking it over, so I left it as you see it. A flying bug would look good in my opinion. Do walleye jump out of the water for bugs?

Walleye's aren't top feeders that often they tend to hang on the bottom. When your fishing jigs you always have bait on them, a minnow hooked through the lips, a crawler, a leech or a twister tail. How about a crank bait hooked in his lip. Walleye opener is the 2nd weekend in May if the ice goes out, there is still 2 foot of ice on the lakes.

Hey that's a cool logo. I'd also like to see the jig in front of the fish for 3-d. It's a cool crisp well-balanced logo Russ. (are you going to keep it b & w or are you adding colors?

If it is still in design stage, I think after reading a couple of the pointers here you could tweek it a little. (Todd's sugg. on mouth) for one.
I too see something out of place, and that is the lure. I am not saying it should be in his mouth, iam just saying that my mind sees a fish going after something and yet the lure is on the other side.
I know it has been done before but what about the lure in the mouth and the line coming across to go up where the lure was as it was being caught. that may make it a little more 3-d.
You have done a great job on the fish, as expected.

I haven't talked to the customer for several days. When I do, I'll see what we can come up with for something hooked in the lip. There appears to be a consensus that it would look better that way.
Deb, the customer initially wanted window/boat decals, so I wanted the design to work in a single color before I added anything else. The customer did talk about adding color, so I'm planning to add it later.

Russ, that is SO nice! I live on a small lake, & Walleye are what bring the people here. That is the nicest Walleye graphic I have seen, & I have seen plenty around here!

Thanks Bobbie. You know how to make my day.
I talked to the customer yesterday. Started to mention how we could try to put a lure of some kind in the lip. He said, "No, I like it just like it is."
So, I guess that's that. It's done, with the possible exception of adding color later.
