This was a much-needed shot in the arm for me. Arthur Vanson's Essendine, with VectorArt columns and grapes, and the rest all just me-n-Stevo. BEFORE AFTER! Details...we added a "bumpy" outline a'la Dan. (that's a Tideway "P" by Arthur) The people were so pleased and we even got a free lunch AND dinner. Took about 8 hours. Love....Jill

See Jill, Paint is your Niche, keep up the great work....
How come Stevo wears so much paint after a job well done?

Nice job Jill! That "shot in the arm" is what drives us! Look at Stevo's stature from the first picture to the completed. Keep stickin' that chest out Stevo! Nice work... on brick to boot. Ouch!
P.S. The sad fact is that they probably bought the original stencils from "80 Words per Minute Sign Co." down the road.

...it's my fault Ian....when we were projecting it on the wall the night before, I drew that part. It also has a slight "upward" tilt for some reason! But it feels so good to be appreciated in town that I don't even mind. I hope this brings in more painting jobs. Love....Jill

Jill make sure you show all of your future clients what a before and after can look like. I think you will find it to be a great sales tool. You won't even need words to show the difference.
I'm curious to know what you sold it for if you don't mind.

Great work Jill really nice, want to give us Brits a quick lowdown on how you did it as this type of wall sign painting is pretty much non existant in the UK?

Sure! I talked with the owners in my office about what they wanted the design to look like. Showed em a few alphabets to see what type of lettering they liked. Did a very ruff thumbnail to show them my ideas, which I refined in Corel. Got a deposit. I also did another sketch that I thought of in bed that morning, but they liked the original. Of the two non-reproductable printouts I gave em, they had a contest of sorts. (The cop told me that their customers liked the version we did as he stopped by to talk when we were painting!)
The size is a wee bit smaller than 4'x8'. We went down the day before and taped off a rectangle over the old stuff and painted it in with a mix of 1-Shot bulletin enamel and regular 1-S, adding a hot spot in the middle and working our way out with regular foam rollers.
That night we went down with my overhead projector and shined it on the wall. We sketched it in with stick charcoal as it is more stable in the heat than a Stabilo, but comes off much easier when the job is finished. It drew a crowd of people as well as moths.
We arrived the next day at 8:30 am and set up. Brought a ton of 1-Shot cuz I didn't feel like backtracking, mineral spirits, rags, a trash bag, fitches, quills, sea sponges, and 1" foam brushes. All set up on a drop cloth, of course.
We started with the stuff that got the most outlines and went from there. The wall was not the ruffest, but too ruff for quills. The only part I used the quill on was the very thin phone # as a fitch was just too thick. I did the secondary outling on the copy with the tip of a 1" Foamie! The rest was all fitches.
We added the grey sponged shadow to disguise the overspray from the original sign. I was going to add a blended outline, but Stevo suggested the sponge, and it took him about 10 minutes.
Stevo and I are both detail freaks, but sometimes we don't agree on color. He suggested the natural drop shadow on the background by the columns, etc. The Dan outline was a last minute decision on my part to keep Stevo busy whilst I was doing the black outline on the copy...shhh!
The columns were marbelized in a way. I did the one on the left to show Stevo the technique. He picks up stuff VERY quickly. He did the wet blends on all the grapes too. They look almost real in person. We kept plugging away at it and it was great to hear the comments from the employees and customers.
We finished in just under 8 hours. I bid this job way too cheap of course, but I would have almost done it for free because it made me feel so good. I had told them $250 and it should have been twice that. I didn't think they would ever go for the job, since they had stencilled their own sign initially, and it took them 3 months to decide to get the wall done. I had about $20 in materials cost. I told them they were really getting a price break on the job, and they realized it.
It was also a cheap ad for me because I know that I am the only person in this area who is able to provide this service and I hope to bring in more wall jobs.
Here is a pic of the way I signed it. I put the date in Roman numerals on the top of the other column. Love....Jill Posts: 8834 | From: Butler, PA, USA | Registered: Jan 2001

Thank you for all the nice comments folks. This was a very fun job to do. It's funny how you draw an audience doing this type of work as opposed to stickin' sticky stickers to things you can stick them to. I always learn on these types of wall jobs and it is more gratifying. Heck, the owner even hugged Jill she was so thrilled.

OH MY! So beautiful! Thanks for explaining it too. So you basically drew this image then scanned it on your puter and into corel then printed it onto a transparency to project onto the wall. Is that right? This is all new to me - I love it.

Jill, I do a LOT of work like that....from my experience, donn't make it a habit of giving your work away, They will expect it everytime if you do. I know you love to do what you do, But, that is a $500 job EASY! (just like you said). Don't be scared to bid high. There are many fish in the sea and the ones you didn't catch the first time will probably come nibbling on your line later anyway, Either that or they will stay with that same 'ole stencil sign forever.
