Thanks for the help with the African typefaces. Here's what I decided on. It took a while to get the head the way I wanted, but I like it. Any comments?
Here is the final version that the client signed off on. I'm happy with some of the changes, but I don't think that the face pops enough.

Terry, great illustration, the colours are perfect too. But, the "by Son" or is it "by Gon"? That letter is vague, to me.

I'm having a problem with the script too. She wants it to look like she signed it, but it doesn't really fit. Their product is hair braiding and Son is short for Sonya.

Great looking sign! I agree with the comments above.
A couple other things I'd consider. The way the longest braid comes down and continues with the slant of the A kinda bothers me a bit. I'd try to offset the two a bit. I'd also make the copy in the lower panel a little darker than your main copy so that it recedes back from the name.
I realize it's probably her tag line, but it doesn't describe at all what she does. I'd try to talk her into scrapping the panel all together and replace it with something that really says what she does.

If it were me, I would try to get her to let you put "by Sonya" rather than "by Son". That is, IMO, a term of familiarity, a knickname, and it is liable to be misunderstood or misread. Those who know her probably call that, those who don't will wonder where the "father" is to go with the "son".
I also would put something clearer as the secondary copy. The elements of the design are really good though, and achieve what I think you were shooting at.

I really think you should have gone to the bookstore and bought at least one book on African art. It doesn't look African at all. Time for a redesign.

I really like it! The illustration is very cool.
My concern was with the "S" also. I also thought the nose should face the other direction. But that's just me.
And, I like the way the beaded braid goes into the letter.
Just my 2 cents. But then again, my 2 cents may not even be worth that.

Why not have her write her signature then you can scan, vectorize and put it in with the design?
Looks more Caribbean than African to me, but if you have a hairdresser/braider that's willing to pay for such a nice design, I say let it ride!
Show her what you got, see what she thinks. She's the one that has to live with it every day.
On a side note, last winter I was in the Caribbean and the braiding/cornrows are very popular there. Those gals can braid a whole head in 10 minutes, it's like their hands are on fire. They charge tourists like $15 to get it done, but here in the US getting cornrows done can get upwards of $200!

Terry.. I think it looks just fine....only thing I'd do would be to edit the bottom sroke of the "S" just a bit to make it look a little more curvy, so it doesn't get misstaken for a G. Overall, it's a nice looking sign though.

This is the thought I had when I saw your post last week. It seemed you didn't have the overall look you needed in mind. You were trying to compensate with a font. Your major element is great, but there are other aspects that might have been tweeked some.
