was wondering did you use the 18lb so as to have a smoother surface to gild?
I think I am going to do a couple of 4x8's with stone pillars as posts and goldleafed lettering for our church.
Look out folks.... the questions will be flying soon if I do the job.

Ricky, I used the 18# for the reason you mentioned, and for strength, even though the sign is banded in 3/8" aluminum flat sock. Thanks for the compliments. Bob

Once again thanks for the kind words. The posts are 6x6 pressure treated. I eased the eges with a 3/4 roundover bit, and routed some flutes in the faces. The finials are made by "sandwiching" 2 pieces of 2" thick HDU to make a block 4" thick, 7" x 7". I tilted the table on my bandsaw to 45 deg's, and took off the sides with a 1/2" coarse blade and a fast feed, to give it some texture. I mounted them to the tops of the posts by driving 4 exterior drywall screws into the top of the posts, and I "clipped" the heads off to leave four small studs about 3/4" long. I then put a healthy bead of silicone on the post tops, and "pressed" the finials down. Bob K.
