Has anyone layed vinyl on clear varnish? I have a boat that the customer wants lettered and they have put down varnish first. This boat will not be in the water but is used as a boat bar on "dry land". Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Lynn..Don't hold me responsible for a failure but I can see no reason to worry about laying vinyl over gloss varnish.

No problems, mate...... I have applied HP vinyl and SignGold on boats finished with Spar varnish down in the tropics. Just ensure all contaminants have been removed with Rapid Prep.

Yeah, like Roger said. It's important to make sure that the varnish is completely cured, not just "dry" to the touch. Check the manufacturers notes for curing time. I've seen some creepy things happen to vinyl when it's applied to things that arent done curing / outgassing yet.

On a continuation of the same topic. I am doing a large varnished transom also but my client is concerned on how to re-varnish it when the time comes. Varnish won't overcoat vinyl so what are his options? If I frog juice the vinly before I apply it will he be able to varnish overr it in a couple of years if necessary?

Bill, I think that depends on the condition of the Frog Juice at that time, more then its general overcoat compatibility.
Varnish dosn't bite too hard, so it is not likely to bite TOO deep into the surface of Frog Juice. But if you spray the vinyl with a "auto type catalized" paint then apply on varnish, it will most likely be ok in a year or two, for re-varnishing.

The boat yard was considering on of the 'two part" varnishes. Mayby I'll coax them that dierction.
