What is it about coyotes that makes them able to lure dogs towards them, almost in a trance-like state?
This morning I had my dog out for her walk. We go down to the lake to a spot where I dont need to keep her on a leash (usually) cause otherwise it would take a 6 hour walk to burn off her energy.
She spotted a coyote and started trotting towards it, ears fully perked up and locked into position like radar... yet not a single bark, which is weird cause if it had been a person or another dog (or rabbit, squirrel, bird, lizard, snake, tarantula, scorpion or plastic trash bag floating in the wind) she never would have shut up!
It's like she wanted to make friends with the coyote.
Anyway.. my dog was attacked by a coyote a few weeks ago, but apparently coyotes cant see too well at night cause he picked a victim that was more than he could handle. Rizzo (my dog) killed him in a heartbeat, suffering only a bite on her tail where it appears he tried to sneak up on her to take her down. I guess the attack isn't enough to convince Rizzo it's not a good idea to go play with coyotes either.
So, back to this morning.. I did what any other sane dog person would do... I started jumpin', screamin and hollerin' while hurlin' rocks at both the coyote and Rizzo. Hey, it works! The coyote ran into some brush and Rizzo came back to see if I was OK.

Mike, your female dog was probably attacked that night simply because she is female. Coyote females do not come into "season" like dogs. Instead the male does. Sort of like deer in rut and the female is receptive. Dogs and coyotes can breed, but usually the breed dies out because of the difference in mating habits. The females aren't always fertile when the mood hits the male and vice versa due to mixing the genes. I'm not sure as to whether or not they carry rabies, but I'd keep Rizzo away from them. If nothing else, she's gonna "tick" them off because she is not receptive to them!

I pretty much live in the 'city'. We have coyotes that come up from the water (evidently they sleep by the rocks down by Lake Washington). One year they kept coming up and killing all the neighborhood cats at night.

Randy, your dog sounds familiar. let me guess.. does the phrase "sudden outbursts of energy" describe your dog pretty well? When I asked the vet why she chases her tail for no apparent reason (thinking she might have something wrong with her tail - fleas, bugs, etc.) he says "Oh, that's great fun for terriers!"
She's a terrier mix with some spitz and I think some pitbull too.. neurotic like a terrier, overprotective and barks like a spitz, and a wicked muscular structure like a pit... what a great combo. It's alot of dog packed into a 50 pound body, lemme tell ya!

Cheryl, Somebody must have been feeding those Seattle coyotes Chinese food. Once they've tasted that stuff, they get a real appetite for feline meat. I'd be really wondering what's really in those sweet 'n sour ribs, or that dim sum next time you order that stuff. LOL
