It seems to me the point that Kevin was trying to make is that residents of Letterville are treated better than visitors.
I would just like to say that I was a visitor for a long time before becoming a resident.
As a visitor, I asked a few questions, and received a LOT of good advice. As a visitor, I gained TONS of useful information by reading other peoples posts. As a visitor, I attended a few live meets which were organized and announced on this board. As a visitor, I was treared as one of the family at these meets as well as here on the board.
No one refused to answer my questions.
No one treated me as any less of a man.
No one treated me as any less of a signpainter (although there are MANY on here that I may never measure up to in my own mind)
No one said I HAD to pay "dues" or "taxes".
I simply decided that I was gaining enough knowledge and friendship here that I did not want this place to dissappear. I sent my money in to help Steve and Barb keep this board alive.
The only difference I have seen is, now I have that ugly picture beside my name.
BTW... In the time I have been here, I have seen quite a few "residents" get flamed for the same type of request.
It's a nice town, and I hope I can stay forever.

There will always be some people that will never get it. Kevin is only one of two persons this past week who have taken upon themselves to push their beliefs upon us. Last night there was a post by a Todd something that was removed before if even started and I applaud Steve for catching it early as it wasn't worth an answer.
I have been a visitor here since practically day one and the same goes for the town I literally live in. Though I am comfortable and treated well by many, there will always be a couple who can't handle my accent, my honesty and my experience, but thats just the way the ball bounces.
Those who come to this site to find the worst in us will probably get more then they bargained for and yet those who want an honest answer will get theirs in record time. Some haven't a clue regards to the craft they have chosen and believe that ol' signpainters are on their way out because of new technology, they call plotters vinyl cutters, as if that is the only ting it does or was made for. Even those souls who drew blueprints in the past use plotters now for their expertise.I wonder if they are treated the same way by newbies in their trade. I read a reply to Old Paint Joe practically calling him a dinosaur and believing that all he uses is paint, what a misconception. As technology gathers speed, this site will gather newbies coming into this trade as the real ' know it alls ' believing that paint has gone the way of the steam locomotive and we as paint artists are just to old to understand. As if the programmers to sign programs and graphic engineers as they like to be called truly have a life beyond the keyboard.
And by the way, how do people learn the use of colors, is there a program for that also?

Well, if thats the point that Kevin was trying to make, I think its wrong. I've never seen anyone get better treatment than someone else.
I do think there are those here who are more level-headed than others about things, and some are more mature. There are those who are more active here. But, if it weren't for all of those those differences, this place would be pretty darn boring.
However something puzzles me. I notice several times that someone will make a post about something, usually a new person....it rides thru to the bottom and then off the page...never having any kind of response. It seems that this person wants to have some kind of response....maybe just an acknowledgment that someone read the post and say's SOMETHING....anything.
Seems that they would surmise....OK, nobody really gives a **** about what I have to say...so I won't post here anymore.
I know what you are going to say....bieng a "Resident or a Visitor" here doesn't require me to respond...if I have nothing to say. However consider this...If several people are standing around in a group...face to face...and someone comes up and stands for a moment, and then adds his or her comment...and everyone ignores them...what are they to think? Sometimes what we DON'T say, say's a lot!
Oh-well...just an observation!

Remember the old joke about going to the fights and a hockey game broke out?!? I have to admit that I find the controversies quite amusing and have to say that it makes the BB more interesting. Guess I just don't have enough time on my hands or the will to engage in the hoopla. Takes plenty of time just to keep up with reading all or most of these lengthy controversial posts nevermind the genuine professional posts. Sometimes I wish I could catch the ones that have been removed or edited just for their entertainment value. Maybe we need a new seperate forum to move them to and call it "Trash-Talk"(LOL)

Thank you Don. I was wondering what 'it' was.
I haven't seen any difference from becoming a resident here. I was a visitor for about 6 months before paying my dues 4 months ago. It's not like I paid my taxes and suddenly new doors opened for me. I paid my dues because this place feels like home and I don't want to see it go away.
I have seen a bit of a difference, but I attribute that to my having met some people here face-to-face, the level of involvement I have put in here and the friendships I've developed in chat. I know when I respond to a post, I don't look to see if a person's status is visitor or resident. I do however feel a little irked when I see someone who has a zillion posts and is still a visitor.

Jackson is right. I have seen it too. Somebody new posts a question and hardly anybody replies at times. I do find most of the posts extremely entertaining. You have to admit the twists they take can be very funny. Through the years you can really get to know the people who post regularly. I enjoy most everyones posts. And all should be made to feel welcome.

It's been great here, and when I have some money (approx 100 Australian) I will become a resident, if I can... though that is allot of money for me, as I earn no income, and will be going to uni this year, and will have to pay that off too. I don't think that visitors/residents get treated any differently.. at least that is my perception. I could be wrong, of course

I have also seen unanswered posts, & have replied as a social grace (& to bump up for another chance from the rest) even if I don't have the neccessary experience to give all the info requested.
So, I wonder if you have seen them go off the page why did you not respond, but then announce how that may have been insulting?

Jackson, I too have noticed the unanswered posts. Makes me feel a little bad sometimes, but I don't have too many answers with not even a year and a half experience. I'm glad Cheryl noticed also. So perhaps when we all see a post that we don't have an answer for and there has been no response, we could take a minute to wish them well and bump it up in hopes that someone who does know can answer.

I also wish there was a place like this when I was starting out! Trouble is, there weren't any computers, or sign magazines , or anything! I am so old , when I started out, we painted on cave walls using some fur on a stick! And Pierre was carving dugout canoes with sharpened rocks!

Doug...sometimes I do answer them...sometimes I don't.I am not implying that these are post asking for help... Those ALWAYS get answered. I notice that the post sometimes don't require an answer at all...it is directing you to another site or just making an announcement that doesn't require an answer. However...I have seen some that didn't recieve anything. Also....I am not trying to make anyone wrong...so pardon me if I did...it was just an observation. I do the same thing. Just bringing it up shows me that I am also guilty....Your right tho....thanks for bringing that to my attention....

Good thread Don, I agree witcha, never felt any outside pressure to become a resident. with the sharing/learning and feeling more & more a part of this BB, I put pressure on myself to support Steve-n-Barb's efforts. I have noticed that over the past 6 months or so there have been a lot of new names pop up here. I was curious to see how these folks were assimilated into this group, especially watching to see if the BB began to split into groups.
I am glad to say that hasn't happened,IMHO. I try to add to the discussion when I feel I have something valuable to say; and the time to say it. If its already been said I tend to read on, or move on.
BTW, Don if ya wanna trade pics, I'll go fer it. you look like 'the distinguished gentleman from Utica; I look like the Butler bum who just crawled out from under a bridge!

I will speak for myself here, about six years ago I was just getting into making signs and I drove up to Las Vegas to the Big Show. I sat through a bunch of seminars led by Bob Bond, Mr "J", Dave Shaw and a few others. In one seminar, me and this guy sat together and had a blast!! We joked with the instructor, made fun of ourselves and had a good 'ol time! Whatever the class was, I guarentee everybody had a good time and we all learned something new ta boot!! I knew this was going to be one of the best experances of my life!
Anyway, when I got back home and read through all the stuff that I had picked up at the show, there was a photo of that guy I had been hanging out with!
Friggen Herb Marteniz!!! He told me his name, but I never realized it was THAT HERB!!!
This board is also new to me. You guys make me feel at home here, and for that I thak you! A place to learn and sound off!! It's only NATURAL that once ya've "hung" around for a while, met a few people and intermix, that more people will respond to posts that they might not normally have because they probibly have NO intrest in the subject area nor do they know the author?? Makes sense to me!
Anyway, I respect each and everyone of you for your talent, your willingness to share your knowledge and allowing me to be a part of this movement! I also EXPECT that when I post something off the wall I won't receive a "oh that's nice" when it looks like CRAP!!
BTY... Thanks Herb!

Old Paint, you hit in on the head for me. Until I get to a meet, it's only words and photos of you all that I can relate to. And some great words too!.I've been a letterhead in my head since Chester Cunninghams (RIP) first articles in SOTT and his book, and Signcrafts first issue, but only now am I in the right(I think) space to fulfill those ideals. Most of my posts are my corny humour, but I sure enjoy seeing all the "Heart" out there. Again, face to face is what i'm looking forward to, it's just a long way to the East/South.
