Got an e-mail from an architect yesterday. Included was a black and white AutoCad rendering of a project sign I am going to be doing.
I called them up and asked about color references. The guy I talked to informed me that they couldn't output a color rendering on a printer from autocad, but asked what I used for a graphics program. When I told him CorelDraw he announced that he would re-do the layout in Corel and e-mail it to me.
I was expecting the worst.
Unbelievably, I received the files today, and it is the BEST rendering I have ever seen from an architect! He even sent TTF font files in case I didn't have the ones he used!
The best part????? This 4'x 8' sign is actually to scale in Corel and measures 4'x 8'!!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!!
I think I am in love with this guy!!!!

doesn't sound as weird as you may think Dave, because Mark Klein used to send me masks as well as layouts done to spec in Corel. Whats the big fuss?

Joey..The fuss is the fact that an "architect" actually switched to Corel for doing something that didn't require AutoCad. I don't know how many architects you have dealt with regarding signs...BUT they can be a pain!

In my house it's the norm. Heath is an AutoCad guru, I.T. specialist with all kinds of Nerd Degrees (oh he hates that) , and when he kicked me off the Mac's and dropped into to PC land he gave me Corel 4... so I made him learn it too. Then Illustrator, and Photoshop, and QuarkExpress. Over the years he has turned out some pretty decent flyers and postcards and logo ideas as well as all my designs for awnings on buildings and sign designs that resemble that of a glorified playhouse. (He has done all those in AutoCad for me then exported them out and dropped them into Illustrator for me. Once in Illustrator you can then export the file in a format that Corel will accept and then in Corel, save it as a Corel Doc. Whalah! Corel file from an Architect.)
Ya know Dave, he would be a great resource for you in those awning type jobs and signs that in essence are a building in themselves. They can whip those things out in AutoCad in nothing flat compared to me drawing it in Corel.
I would also use Heath's AutoCad drawings (exported and imported) to show the large sign that the client wants proportionately to the building they are in. Makes for no "guesses" on how big 10' x 36' is on their building. But then I'm married to my AutoCad guy and get it for free... well, almost.
I believe, however, that inside all architect-drafter types is an artist just dying to break free, most of them just don't seem to be able to relax enough to let it escape. Too many walls I guess.
