Talk about a thing of the past! at least in my neck of the woods they are.
How many still do em and if you do when was the last time you did?
I just did 3 this afternoon 48"x80" and it was a lot of fun. I forgot how good they are for practice with hand lettering ( or shaking off the rust ) I sold 4 more last week just to do em and keep my brushes wet.
I wouldn't want to do em all day but they are good money makers when you can get em.
Also a good way for people to learn layout & lettering.

Jim King up in my area has a deal with the liquor stores all over he pumps them out quick foor about 3 bucks a sq ft! last ones I did were over a year ago and I charged 5bucks a sq. ft I just can see how he does it and makes any money. They are way differnt then lettering on metal or wood. How about the old Cardboard showcard? Havent done one of those in like 5 years... how about you?

Very few people remember them....unfortunately, the ones that do, also remember a 3'x5' was $8...and expect the same price! NOT from me!
I also remember Smitty knocking out 2'x5'... 22 each...on 4 different paper signs in a morning! The market paid him $2 each....lots of money in the early 70's!

I had a bulk food store that I did paper signs for years and notified them earlier this year no more paper signs. Not a money maker, at least at what most are willing to spend. No perceived value.
I will still do them, but whenever the rare occasion for a quote comes up, the customer usually changes his order to a more substantial material. I suppose they feel if they are going to pay so much, it might as well be on a better substrate.

Yep... Paper "butcher" signs have long since gone by the way, but at one time they were a lucrative part of a small shop's business. They were done every Wednesday for the markets' Friday specials. Clem Waski was our paper man and with a helper to move the paper sheets to the drying rack he could turn out around 100 butcher signs in a day. I think we got around two bucks each for the paper signs at the same time we were getting $50 for a 4x8, so the money was pretty good for those days.

In my town they have a regulation that any paper signs put up in a window MUST be removed after 30 days. The regs continue: If you don't remove it in time - and they have to come after you - they give you 90 days to get rid of it! There is a cleaners in town that has had a paper sign in their window for 30 years. Every 10 years or so they trim a couple inches off the edge, and sweep up the dead flies in the sill. Up until a month ago it was the ONLY sign they had. They added another paper sign next to the original. $5.00 a sq. ft. for paper? A 3 x 10 would run $150.00. Sounds too good. One place I worked in in '77 was called "Dollar Signs" - he did any sign for $1.00. They were only on butcher wrap and were fast and loose you can bet, but of course people made him miserable for it so he hired me to do all the enamel jobs (at my prices). I haven't done a paper banner in 15 years and don't miss them. I DO miss sho cards, though. *sigh* ah, the old days...
