Ok...here's a tough one for you Vic. If you can create a Mask in PhotoPaint to eliminate a background, how can you Import that mask, as a Vector, into CorelDraw? The Mask is simply an outline, but it would also be nice to import as a Vector, and assign a cutline to it for making vignette type shapes from the bitmap files.

one that's really been bugging me...
In corel is there a way to select all objects of a certain assigned color (not pantone fills)? ... like in GA composer how you can select by vinyl

Roy....Tools/options/page. Uncheck "show page border" and then hit OK if you just want to eliminate the page border in the current document. If you want the border to go away in all future documents don't hit OK but go to "document" and check the box that says "save options as default for new documents (make sure all of the "options" are checkmarked) and his OK there.

Ken, i do that sort of thing all the time

its easier to select a background thats fairly non-discript with the magic wand in photopaint, hit the mask/remove holes thingie to get it all and fill it with a solid colour, hit make new object from cut selection, invert the mask, make new object from this cut section and save the file.
open draw, drop the file on the screen, ungroup it all then send just the background part to corel trace, vectorise it and hit save.
this puts the vector outline back in exacly the same place you had the bitmap.
from here i break apart the vector send the inside shape to the router to be cut from 'whatever' and either make a transparency of the bitmap pic (remember it wasnt the thing i vectorised) so that i can airbrush it on the bit of stuff the router is gunna spit out or i send it to the pc60 ifn its only small with the cut line around it for the knife to chop, slice n dice it....

now that was too easy
whats next?

cheers

I have a serious Corel question: why can Corel 7 not import .ai files? I used to use a simple, cheap program that could easily do it.

seriously gray, mine used to, actually i cant recall ever having a problem with ai files in any of the corels

but anyway you need to check your import filters
its been so very long since ive seen the ver7 screen so joe would be able to help more than i can with where the ver7 import filters are stored

in later versions you go to tools/options/global/filters and check your 'list of active filters' to make sure ai is there, if its not you just have to drag it across

hey joe, lend a hand bro

cheers

Why does my corel keep doing illegal activities and shutting down (about once a week, more if I'm busy)? And, what exactly constitutes an illegal activity for a software program? It's not robbing a bank or murdering someone.

Yeah Kissy...
I just upgraded to Corel 9 and I'm getting lots of illegal stuff lock-ups. Also, why did they change CTRL-A from Align to Select All....I'm too used to it the other way.

Garrick...I was talking to Chris on chat today and she explained what she was running Corel 8 on, as far as computor resources. I reccommended a radical upgrade of RAM. Corle suggests that 31 meg of RAM is the minimum requirement, with 64 meg recommended. In actual fact, I would think that 128 meg of ram for versions 8 and 9 are more reasonable minimums.

I used to run 8 with 64meg and got lockups, went to 128 meg and they seemed to not happen. Same thing with version 9, except in that case I went to 256 meg. I am now using version 10 and have 512 meg of ram....no lockups or illegal actions etc. Smooth sailing!!

Also a simple thing that can free up memory for you is to reduce the levels of "undo" that it has to remember. Default is 99 "undos" and that is a lot of memory consumption.

To reduce the "undo" level to 15, much more reasonable, go to tools/options/workspace/general and change the default from 99 to 15. Don't click OK there but scroll down to "documents" and check the box that says "save options for future documents, THEN hit OK

That should free up some meory for you.

ok.... Here's one...

How come I can't import an AI file from Casmate into corel 8? Does this have anything to do with the fact that Casmate is a 16 bit program and Corel 8 is a 32 bit program?

How come when I import an AI file from Inspire into Corel 8, it changes the sizes of the artwork?

This just recently happened (unbeknowst to me... oh boy...) and really messed up the window prints I had printed up by an outside vendor.

Are there any settings that can be dinked with to remedy these things? Is there a special way of setting up my artwork to elimate this? Any help with these would be most appreciated.

Have a great one!

im on dave's side here.... suprise, suprise

he who dies with the most ram wins!

actually reducing the undo's IS a vital step to smooth running i believe
i have my students set theirs to 25 until they get more confident within the program and then suggest 15 is ample

the other thing to notice is how often your auto save is activated
if you are running low on resources to start with and you have 'save' set to every few mins you will notice lots more 'not responding' problems.

while your working on a big file you will confuse the puter by telling to do 2 things at once, editing sumfin and saveing the file all at the same time will kill the program real quick

dont forget you can set the amount of systems resources that corel uses
windows will grab any and all that it can so i have my corel set to use 75% of the system

cheers

Bruce, I have CasMate, Illustrator, & Corel (Inspire too, but never learned that yet) As for exporting out of Casmate to Illustrator I've been very happy with the results most of the time. Sometimes on complex files I only get part of the file. Then I will go back & export in 2 or 3 pieces. I really don't use Corel very much but going between Illustrator & Corel seems to be even more consistent. I guess I would try going to Illustrator first, then Corel.

Laura..I was wondering the same thing...In fact I went back and checked some of the last posts that involved Glenn.

I didn't see anything that would have made him quit posting.

In fact, even Mark didn't annoy him! (Jokin Mark! Don't hit me! )

I seriously wonder what happened?
