Just an opinion. I do mostly real gilding, but if I were going to do it on plexi, I would use signgold. Faster easier, and you are going to loose some clearity with the plexi anyway. It would probably work fine though. Life of a gild 20+ years. Life of plexi in the sun 6 to 8. You can get signgold for in or outside application on glass (adhesed on gold side) Bronzeo

You can with oil based size, I prefer a 50/50 mix of La Franc slow size& One Shot fast size, scuff with a scotch pad then prep with naptha. Air brushing or spraying size on works best.

Gold leaf on plexiglas is a different animal, you will get frustrated with the static electricity. A wipe with water first will help eliminate the problem. Good luck.

Thanks Bill, you beat me to the static issue. Amy, if you have a static problem, put the water on the opposite side you're working on. Don't rub the water on, just squeeze it on out of a sponge or rag and let it flow down the surface.
Are you talking about doing reverse gold on the backside of the plex? Bob Rochon just gave a demonstration of that at Mass Mayhem last. Gel caps dissolved in warm water, the whole bit. I can think of one major problem - getting the excess gold off after the job's done. Bob used a lot of abrasive bonami to rub it off after his backing black was dry. That would be disasteous on plexi.

I've gilded on plexi before. Seems that I used the size on the weak side and cleaned the surplus off with spit rather than Bon Ami. Splash works great for that also. Remember, no trimming with a razor!
