Looking for ideas on how to preserve wood with bark on it against the elements. This will be cut lettering with bark.

I don't read all the posts... but this one caught my eye.

One question...

Is the tree still alive or is it a piece of a tree?

Need more input.

If you are talking about cutting a living tree into chunks and making something out of the pieces with the bark attached, the wood has to be treated with PEG (Polyethylene Glycol-1000).(available from The Crane Creek Co. in Madison, WI.) It is a wood stabilizer and chemical seasoning agent. It preserves the molecular structure in the wood. PEG is a waxlike chemical that has to be melted and disolved in hot water then the wood is soaked a few weeks then air dried for a few more weeks before you can successfully work with it. But, be advised, the wood does not retain that "freshly cut" look. It turns dark and weathered looking. I have only worked with Live Oak so, I don't know the results of other species.
Patrick Spielman wrote a very informative book in 1980 called "Working Green Wood with PEG".
Hope this helps you some !!
