Reflecting on past events,I noticed the Red,White, and Blue flag design on Coops very FIRST signature than started the "Baby Doll" on her adventures. After her arrival at The Duck Soup Splatter Jam,with even more names added, our Saturday night candle light vigal,my sending her on her way to yet another destination.I was struck by just how much unity was and is being shown by this simple concept of a "Banner Across America" More so than the AIDS Victums Quilt that was done and got NATIONAL ATTENTION! Wouldn't it be great if our(Letterhead)show of unity throughout America by way of the Baby Doll.Could be picked up by the national press as a human interest story? Does any one know anyone in the news media that might be interested in this type of action being done? I haven't heard of any other group doing something like this to help promote "togetherness" in this time of tragedy. It also would hurt the promotion of the lettehead movement itself to the Public. After all, aren't WE the ones they turn to when they want to Show thier Patriotism? What does everyone think of this idea?

I would be happy to participate...but my twist might be somewhat unique since I do terrible hand paint...
Oh...and also...I had planned to attend your meet and because of the tragedy, something happened which forced my plans to change...but I have a special gift to give ya when I see ya!
Put me down for the banner...I have something planned that will blow your mind!!!!!!!!!

Pat, Love the idea. Wouldn't hurt to promote the Letterhead movement either. Let me make sure I understand what you are saying..get some national news service to cover Coop's Babydoll banner. What we went thru when "babydoll" was lost and all the e-mails and attempts made by Letterheads to locate it would be another story. Just seems some of the replies to this post suggests starting another banner.
What do you think about e-mailing "babydolls" story to FOXNews and some other national news services? I mention FOXNews Network because I know they accept e-mails. Judy

Maybe even submit the story here! I've been reading this BB very thoroughly for almost 4 weeks, missing some posts of course, but not many, & I am sure I'm not getting the whole story. Sounds like a blank banners starts out on a trip to several artists getting random un-planned painted embelishments along the way. & it got lost once?, and picked up a little red white & blue paint at some juncture?
Sounds cool, but it's true newsworthyness has not been spelled out for me yet. & the name?
So I have no doubt as to the value of the story, I've been wondering weather or not to ask, so this seemed like the time.

Hi Pat, A great idea, but when you think of it, we were way ahead of the country when it comes to unity. What I can't understand is why the news media don't pick up on our walldog events which are community service and a terrific story of what can be accomplished in only one week end. So many dedicated people giving of their time to improve a town or city. It seems that this is not what sells newspapers.

Bill, you are so right about BOTH accounts that as letterheads we are way ahead of the rest of the country on unity. Being that this Baby Doll project has well been started,it ALSO is timely in respect to the events of recent! MAYBE just MAYBE this is the "exact"time in which to get the national news media involved in the unity aspect AND letterhead movement disguised as PATRIOTISM(seeing as Art and helping one another)doesn't seem news worthy. Judy,YES that is a good idea to right a letter of the goings on of the banner itself. Two(2) things I think we need.A writer(Cisco?)News media connection(personal?)Although E-Mail is a mighty good idea. Doug,The "Banner Across America" was started by Coop send around to be signed by as many as possible to be auctioned off at a later date, with proceeds going to the Letterville Community Chest. IF by any chance National attention can be obtained by this venture so as potental advertisers will join the "cause" more the better! That is to say,the proceeds from the auction can be given to(Red Cross,Rescue, etc)from and in the name of the citizens of Letterville. We will be achieving the goal of all peoples with the Letterhead Spirit of "Helping our fellow man in times of need" In this case the terrorist action. Once again, any other ideas or suggestions on how we can pull this endevor off?

Stand by whilst I pull my soapbox out from under the bed.........
Perhaps maybe one of our wonderful sponsors would be willing to offer up a LARGE banner for us to create such a patriotic symbol showing the dedication of the letterheads and how we can pull together in a time of need.
Maybe if one of those wonderful sponsors is willing to do such a wonderful thing one of us might be able to arrange with FedEx or another high profile overnight shipper. We can make arrangements to pick dates when this patriotic banner can be had at Regional locations for a one night mini meet of letterheads in that general area so we can get it signed, also for the supporters of this banner we would gladly give unto them some advertising space upon our patriotic banner so they dont feel left out.
Then perhaps whilst the banner is coming to life the letterhead in each location where it is sent to can contact the local media and arrange for the media to attend the mini meet and I would imagine we would want to have some sort of pre-written news packet for the media to give it some sort of continuity as to the concept and progress of our patriotic deed. Then hopefully when this banner is completed I might be able to contact one of the major media hourly news shows (such as 60 minutes {neighbor works for one of them}) and perhaps convince them to do a short story about it.
Maybe they can help us to auction it off for proceeds to benefit the September 11th disaster relief fund or the Red Cross. Oh and while each region holds thier mini meet it would probably be a good idea to have a donation bucket and maybe accept donations from passersby etc.... Hey maybe this can be done in a local shopping mall or something and maybe we can contact local radio stations and have them do the free advertising and, hell this could grow unbelievably.
People, Use your imagination. there is so much out there for us to do to help our fellow Americans. But lets do something!!!!
Yes I will be glad to help get this idea off the ground !!!!!

Donna,Yes the banner to be auctioned off with proceeds going to this BB.Doesn't the SAME thing happen when "several" major sponsors are attracted to this board? Harris,Good thinking on the local level."Watch Signpainters at work"he he he AND you know someone who works for a media needed for this!(kewl) this is what is needed. I just saw a spot on CNN where children somewhere were writing messages of hope, inserted into ballons to be released. Surely this banner idea should get that and more. Keep the ideas coming! Anyone come up with a press release yet?

I think the place to start is in your own backyard - call a local nes station that's affiliated with CBS, NBC or ABC. See if they are interested in the story. If they're interested, then ask if they can send it "over the wires". Most news stories come from AP or Reuters - wires that are shared by all networks. Pehraps look up Reuters" on the net & e-mail them? Just my 2 cents worth. By the way - I just e-mailed CNN and asked for a contact for a possible news story. I gave a brief description about Letterheads & Baby Doll. Who knows - I'll pass along any response to anyone who wants to carry the ball with this if I get some interest from CNN.

I'd be glad to get back on my original idea. (I won a 2'x10' (d-ring) banner at Mark Fair's meet in December 1999.) I had hoped you could have taken it back from Pat's and hung it on the fence where they had the Memorial. I do feel a little apprehensive about us, as a group, sayin..."Hay yawl, watch this..." for obvious reasons.

I've checked with my friend that works at the local paper. She says she will talk with the editor and see if there might be a story in it somewhere. If we can get a little write-up here, she says that they can send it out to the AP but chances are slim it will get picked up nationally.
I'm not even sure they will write anything locally unless there is a hostage situation.
Keep them ideas coming! Any volunteers to write a short story?
P.S. Mike, Arvil "Shep" has her now, you're getting real close! Hang in there man!
P.P.S. Jackie THANKS A MILLION! keep us posted on how things are going with the local affiliates.

P-King, just got in from working on a broke down boom lift, sort of like a situation you had in Kentucky, I felt honored that you would like me to do a story on the "Baby Doll", but at the present point in time there is just no way I can do anything for a good couple of weeks. I'm in the middle of a project about 98 miles away from home, I had rented a motel to be close to the jobsite, but when the work stopped I had to come home today. I will leave tomorrow (monday) a replacement boom is coming in. I think Jackie hit the hammer on the nail, that's what I would do. So if anyone would like to volunteer to do a short story, please don't be shy. I think it's a dynamite concept. Like they say "your imagination, is your limitation" I say Go for it!"

Hey Pat, Maybe we could all talk to our local news services...and see if they find "Baby Doll" newsworthy. We have NBC and FOX affiliates here. Maybe it would be a good idea to write a short story about “Baby Doll” and the Letterhead movement before contacting them so pertinent info will not be left out! Will let you know if my local news is interested. I was on local TV several years ago concerning lettering windshields. The gal who interviewed me is now a news anchorwoman. Sounds like a good place to start..huh? Judy

Ok - I've had my coffee and since Cisco mentioned my name, I put pen to paper and wrote a blurb. If you like it, use it. If you don't, please don't be afraid to say so! My feelings won't be hurt. Let's just make sure we come up with something real good for a press release. Mine or yours - it don't matter, just as long as it says it all and in a fairly short space - most news agencies will crop the piece anyway.
Press Release: BANNER ACROSS AMERICA Ever have a sign made for your business? A banner for an event? A car pinstriped with a unique design? Ever wonder what these people are called? After all, everyone else has a name - carpenter, plumber, secretary, CEO. To get to the point, yes, they have a name - Letterhead. And they actually have an organization called, of course, The Letterheads. So, just what does this have to do with a Banner Across America? It's simply another story of unity and comraderie, of people showing their true spirit in times of tragedy. The Letterheads is a group of fine artisans, over 6,000 members worldwide. When tragedy struck the U.S. on Sept. 11th, a banner called "Baby Doll" was in progress, being signed by artisans across the U.S. to auction off to benefit their non-profit web site, www.letterhead.com. As with all Letterheads, ideas pop into their heads all day, and sometimes into the night. After all, that's what they get paid for - unique ideas and gorgeous creations. The lightbulb lit once again and Banner Across America quickly became a reality. This banner is being sent around the U.S. to all sign artists for unique signatures and artwork. Once the banner has been completed it will be auctioned off at a Letterhead Meet with all proceeds being donated to -------------. So the next time you pass by a sign shop, a pinstripers garage, give them the high-five and maybe even ask how the Banner Across America is doing. If they're not too terribly busy creating a piece of art, they may bend your ear a bit about this wonderful group. Yes, just another story about the unity felt across our great nation.
