62-year old Long Island, NY signman Anthony Perner was pronounced dead yesterday in a plane crash. Perner was a top aerobatic biplane instructor and was in a plane piloted by a student who was practicing a landing without engine power.
I never had the privilege of meeting Anthony personally, but when I was starting out in the early 80's, he was the sign painter everyone raved about, and he taught some of the best up-and-coming hotshots. I don't know if he was still involved in the sign business of late.
An anecdote accompanied the story, and I recall when this first happened - it just reinforces how crazy we paint slingers are. Back in 1994, Anthony was seriously injured when he was on the runway of an airstrip one night, ~MOONING~ a pilot in a biplane taking off!!! He was struck by the plane and required emergency back and pelvis surgery!
Perhaps others who knew him can provide more sign-related info than I am able to.

I suppose at this point if I suggest that after the accident Tony was no longer able to show a "Full Moon" , instead maybe only a "Half Moon" or that it was a "Half-Assed Stunt" in the first place, that I would be making him the butt of a sick joke??
