What is the most economical method of getting a print onto a pair of mags?
ColorCamm? Gerber Edge? The customer is to provide a file from a digital photo of his airplane.
Any recommendations as to a supplier? Thanks for the help.

There's another Thermal Transfer printer out there called DuraChrome
So in re: best/most economical, I think ColorCAMM is out. The cost per foot is high, and it would need to print on white then be applied to magnetic.
Gerber EDGE has a magnetic that it prints onto, but I'm not sure how expensive the EDGE-ready mag is, or how many mil choice there are. For EDGE output, I think Glenn Taylor is a good guy to talk to.
DuraChrome is a good source for larger format, which could then be applied to any magnetic you wish. If you mag sign is going to be over 11.8 inches wide - both directions - try contacting Brian at Expressions Signs (he's on the Merchant page).

Jim

We print on white vinyl first, then transfer the entire piece to a magnetic sheet, then trim.
Thus we can use the thicker magnetic material.
We are printing with the Gerber Edge, which, is by Glenn Taylor's calculations, less money per square foot than Roland.
So, you could just order the prints, then apply them to the magnetic material yourself.
There should be somebody with an Edge close by in your area. Go over to their shop, get aquainted, it will work out good for both of you.

Thanks Michael, yes economical is the key word here. I suspect Gregory does produce first class quality and I will run that by the client. I'm sure he doesn't want to put much $ into the project though. Thanks Brian, I sent you an e-mail. Great info, Jim, I'll check that out. Dave, we've just barely entered the "plotter age" in this area. I don't know of anyone within a 50 mile radius who has either an Edge, ColorCamm or a CNC router for that matter. The shop down the road, bought a ColorCamm a couple of years ago but he said he couldn't sell enough to justify keeping it. Next time I'm in one of the bigger towns, I'll try to look someone up. Thanks for the help.

I hesitate to say this, because the Fargo is temperamental and at this point a pretty rare piece of equipment, but someone in your area may have one and it will print vinyl from any ordinary file. The largest area you can print without tiling something is 22"x11.95". There are always a couple of inches of extra vinyl to the right and the left of the 22" so it makes a perfect size for magnetics. I print them all the time, did 3 today. Then just like Dave said, apply to the magnetic sheeting and trim and round the corners. Presto. I coat them twice with Krylon acrylic, but it is not necessary, the Fargo uses the same resin as the edge. These mags are popular and they last.

Thanks Myra, Fargo.....seems like I've come across that name somewhere. Where did you get yours? How much did it set you back?
