Love ya, man but I just had to respond to your comment about Texas. I'm not picking a fight or anything, just a little friendly info. In another post here you wrote "There are few places in this beautiful country I wouldn't want to live, Texas is one of them. The crime rate must be something as they are frying people on a daily basis." OK...First of all, we don't "fry" people. We have lethal injection and they are very tough on murder here. They do not kid around. Georgia and Florida use the electic chair. Well now let's see here....It's big country. Would you live in New Mexico? What about Arizona? How about Louisiana? New Orleans is a fun place. I just love Mardi Gras. How about Florida? Everyone loves Florida. They have Disneyworld. Do you like the South? How about Georgia? The Carolinas? Alabama or Mississippi? Maybe a little more North. Delaware? Illinois? Michigan? Hey! Let's go way north. How about Alaska? Beautiful country up there. Would you live in Alaska? Well the truth is that all of of these states, even Alaska, have a higher crime rate than Texas. Most of them rank higher in murder as well. In 2000 Texas executed a total of 40 murderers. That may seem a little high, and it was the nations hightest for that year, but it's a little misleading as to the crime and/or murder rate. Out of the 50 states, we are almost halfway down the list in murder rate, even though we are second only to California in population. Texas has around 21 million. California is around 33 million. And yes, California also ranks higher in crime and murder. A lot higher. Texas is also home to 3 of the top 10 most populous cities. So, basically, we have a whole lot of people down here. Yet, as far as the crime rate goes, we rank pretty much in the middle. We are number #17 overall. If it wasn't for the metropolitan Houston area, we would rank much, much lower. I will give you Houston. Even I wouldn't want to live in Houston. It's a rough place. But as far as the rest of Texas goes, it's really a nice place to live. And there's a lot of it. It takes 16 hours just to drive across it. Actually, New Mexico has the highest crime rate in the US. Florida is right behind it. North Dakota has the lowest. They've done very well. The murder rate in Texas has dropped 25 percent in the past five years mostly due to the death penalty and the concealed weapon permits allowed now. Texas has dropped two states in the rankings from last year from #15 to #17 So far in 2001, Texas has executed 7 death row inmates. They did clean house last year but only expect around 21 this year. Oklahoma is way ahead of Texas this year. Nearly double, with 13. Florida is expected to go higher than Texas too this year. And now for the fun part...Oregon. Yes, good old Oregon, with a population of just a little over 3 million, comes in at #24. Just 7 slots behind Texas. Oregon was #25 last year. Oregon's crime rate has actually gone UP. Texas isn't looking so bad now, huh? Maybe you should come down for a visit and actually see Texas. They don't call it God's Country for nothing. Like everywhere else, we have our bad elements. We're sorry about that whole W thing too. But we also have some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet. Just don't shoot at them. They are getting really serious about that.

Ok, lets not make this a pick on "CJ" thread, I got to finally meet him at my meet this year and he is a Hellva nice Guy and has a great family too!!!!!
But, I have to disagree on this one. After traviling around the country driving a big truck (I have slept in every state except Hawaii and Alaska) Texas would be in my top 3 places to live. Evansville ranks at the top only because most of my family lives here and I think I know about half the people here Other than Evansville my Top 3 would be:
1.Tucson,Az 2. Any place on the Gulf Coast of Florida, not in a major city. 3. Any place in Texas, not in a major city.
All places have their good and bad points, these are just my opinions!!!!

Actually I live in Grants Pass in southern Oregon which has had 1 murder in the past ten or so years and the crime rate is always at its lowest for the fifty thousand who live in or around the pass. I also sorta like Texas but wouldn't want to live there but have passed through.
I'm more into crime then crime fighters for at least I know what I'm up against and can deal with it. I love N.Y. but unfortunately cannot go there, I think they banned me! Vegas was nice but I was banned by the pinstripers there, same goes for south Florida. I just love southern places. I considered Arizona but with all the militants I figured why go there when there are just as many here.
J.T. I have striped and practically lived all over this country in the past thirty years even in Corpus Christi and Dallas, right up to Mena Arkansas. When I post things its usually off the top of my head and no offense meant toward anyone so I guess its really my N.Y. accent that you heard......
Forgive me

Oops...Sorry about that Mark. Open mouth, insert foot. Didn't mean to offend a fellow Texan. I just had a bad experience while working down there once. Some of the Houston area I was in seemed fine, but parts of downtown made me really nervous. And I'm a pretty big guy. I don't know my way around Houston as well as some other Tx cities and found myself in a tight spot a couple of years ago. I think it was a "turf" thing. Then again, there are places in Dallas I won't go either. I guess every major city has a no-man's zone. I just wish I would have known where it was ahead of time before I stumbled into it. I still have to give San Antonio the thumbs up for a downtown area. The riverwalk is a great place. 6th street in Austin can be a whole lot of fun too. Just ask Jenna Bush.

No problem, J.T. I'm not offended because I wasn't born here. But I did choose to live here, not because I love Houston, but because I like my job. Houston can be scary. All you have to do is watch the local news and read the papers. There are lots of areas I'll never set foot in. I live in the suburbs, but crime really knows no boundaries. I keep my doors locked and gun loaded. My neighborhood "feels" pretty safe, but you never know. Home invasions are the new phenomena. THAT'S scary! I recently got a new security system...she's half poodle and half yorkshire terrier. If a leaf falls off a tree, she'll wake the whole neighborhood.
I agree...San Antonio is a great city. But Austin is probably the best of all.
Yeah, those Bush girls sure know how to party! Like father, like daughter(s). I bet they quit drinking when they turn forty.

I have to agree that Texas is a real nice place.... I've been to Dallas and San Antonio.. I have to say I loved San Antonio... the very little I saw of it anyway. The people were real nice the River Walk was Beautiful, even though it was January and around 32 degrees. But the Culture was striking. coming from the far east of Canada it was a stark contrast to what I'm used to. I would love to visit Austin some day, Take in Austin city limits if there still showing those amazing concerts. I would stop by Stevie Ray Vaughn's Statue and say a Prayer.. he was my Idol. Neil

Sheesh Mark....best laugh I've had all day! I've had the same type of security system myself. If you want a really sensitive security system, might I suggest a Westie. They bark at things that ordinary mortals can't even hear and they sound ten times their size. Best of all, they work for shoes. And it doesn't matter if you are wearing them at the time or not. The main problem with a Westie though, is that it THINKS it's ten times its size. I'm glad I don't hear that well. I'd really be a nervous wreck.

Hey, I have a security system like that too, but I think it's defective. He's 6" tall, part dashund, part who knows what. He will bark his head off at anyone who pulls in at the neighbor's, but when they go past there to come here, he jumps off his perch in front of the window and sits in front of the door, tail and tongue wagging waiting to lick them to death.

Friend of mine asked me why I didn't like Texas. I told her "because I've been there". I spent 6 weeks in San Antonio, 12 weeks in Wichita Falls, 2 weeks in El-Paso,(Man did I get drunk in Juarez,TWICE!) 1 week at Carswell, and another 12 weeks in Dyess. I'VE HAD MY FILL THANK YOU. Dyess,(Abaline) was the worst. Heres how that trip went- The 1st night I'm there, we go to a bar, I buy a beer, and here comes the manager, he tells me to remove my baseball hat. Everyone else in the place has a hat on,(cowboy hat), I did, when he left, I put it back on. He calls the cops. I'M STONE SOBER. That trip went downhill from there. Yep- I'm biased, bigoted, and ignorant when it comes to Texas, and I'll keep it that way. Although- ZZ Top is from there, so it aint all bad.
