Been using Precision board just because my main supplier stocks it. A new salesman from another co. claims Sign Foam is better and stronger. Whats your experience with either or both? Are there any drawback or advantages?

I began some years ago as a SignFoam distributor. Later on when I received samples of Precision Board, we began doing some basic tests. First, there is NO difference in strength between the two that can be effectively shown. The main reason I switched is the (then) noticeable difference in the amount of particulates remining in the air when routing. The PB was definitely less. We specialize in large mural carvings and, in my humble opinion, the PB chisels better/cleaner. Probabaly lots of differing opinions out there, but that's my 2c. :^)

Don't have any info on the differences as we can only get the SignFoam brand locally (SignFoamII RPU 2000-15). It appears that it's formula has changed? We don't do a lot of carved work but occasionally have a customer that is willing to go for something a bit nice. Currently working on a 3'x 7' hand-carved piece for a dentist's office, can't get one letter carved without having to hone my tools. Usually I can carve several letters but on this job I can't keep an edge on my tools and the surface is clean, no apparent grit or dirt. The 'feel' of the chisel when making a cut doesn't seem right and the shavings are more brittle than usual. Anyone else noticed any differences in their foam panels lately?

Larry......just email me if you need the info. I have all the "Care packages" right here. We distribute Precision Board. There's no way we can sell to you because of shipping logistics/cost, but we can get the sample box to you and get the name/number of a dealer near you. We can also supply you with methodology help.

I'm beginning to wonder about a possible change in SignFoam now too after reading the above post. My supplier is switching from SignFoam to Precision Board. My rep said at a show he attended, they put a 1 1/2 inch sheet of Signfoam and PB on saw horses, then started piling on the weight in the center. The SignFoam broke way before the PB did.

I have both here in the workshop....I think I prefer the Precision Board, but getting either here is getting harder and harder. I could buy PB thru Terry Colleys company in England earlier but the strength of the British pound makes it 40% more expensive, and with the freight its a non starter. Sign Foam was available here but the former Gerber dealer was bought up by Spandex (Gerber owned) and don't stock it any more, I talked to Chuck Miller President of PB, he's a friendly guy, to see if we could work out a deal if several sign co's got together but its not as easy as all that.
So your lucky at least that you have a choice, I can get other forms of HDU but only in smaller sheet sizes.
Its a shame because I love working with it.

Having used both over the years we switched to PB about two years ago, my boss liked the stuff so much he became the UK supplier. coastal enterprises are always very helpful with any questions regarding the material. We get through lots of the stuff mostly routed with some hand carving.cheers Terry
