Being Gatorfoam is easy to get my hands on in my area, I would like to use it to make some flat and dimensional signs (hand rout). The only downfall I see is that the exposed foam needs to be primed. Does anyone know what primer could be used on Gatorfoam so it doesn't get "eaten" away?

I was thinking about using 1Shot paints, so I thought maybe their vinyl primer or acrylic primer would do the trick.

Any advice?

Thanks.

Timely post randy, I'm taking a break from cutting some deminsional Gatorfoam letters as we speak, you "Have" to use something water based.. Deka works very well, and Krylon has an excellent waterbased exterior enamel. It's actually a metal paint called "Rust Tough" by Krylon, it dries very fast, can be used on just about anything, and is inexspensive, also has lots of colors, no primiming is needed. Works fantastic on Gatorfoam. Good LUCK!
Now I have to go cut some more Gatorfoam.
Neil

Randy, Use latex paint! If you need a bright color like orange or red, Use 1shot after the "base" latex is on. Also, use a roller to "fill" the edges cause it needs 2-3 coats for exterior use. John Arnott

I cut a lot of letters and panels from Gatorfoam...I use exterior flat latex to seal the edges (leave it fat) I brush it on and use a damp rag to wipe of the excess from the face...when it dries I spray the entire letter with automotive grey primer and sand with 400 grit wet or dry then spray the entire piece with centari automotive (usually about 4 heavy coats with a flatting agent to get a semigloss finish). Man they look dynamite!I even have some that are outdoors (they will hold up about 5 years in exterior use.(no problem)

Number one, best primer for any gator foam
is a relativly inexpensive product called
"JASCO Cement Sealer". It is basically the
same stuff used for coating out banners to
make them ready for paint. It is available
at Home Depot at around $12.00 per gallon.
I've used this stuff for years and a gallon
goes a long way.
Good for wood too!
