Hmmm, that's a wide open question. What did you want to know about Photoshop? (I don't have any experience with Director, it's a video editing program, isn't it?)
I can tell you that photoshop is argueably the most powerful, useful and versitile bitmap editing program on the market today. It can be used to do about anything under the sun to a bitmap/scanned photograph, and also can be used to "paint" artwork/renderings from scratch. The full version is relatively expensive, about $600 US, but worth every penny for what it can do. (She'll qualify for Adobe's educational version, which is exactly the same program, but with a different price tag.)
As far as your daughter-in-law learning Photoshop in college, I can assure you that expert knowledge of photoshop will open up alot of job opportunities when she graduates, (which is why she's attending in the first place, isn't it? ) And I would imagine that learning Director will have the same effect on her future.
I wish her all good things for her future.

Hmm... a real school will have these programs available in their bookstore if their courses require it..
Photoshop is pretty much what Don said... flat out, the best and most powerfull image editing tool available.
Director is a program for developing interactive multimedia content, also known as Shockwave.
I can see needing to know Photoshop for preparing images for print or web, but I havent figured out why journalism would require interactive multimedia.
The skills of photo editing are crucial when submitting an article to a sign magazine (or any publication). With those skills, one can get the picture tweeked the way he intends it to look. Otherwise, it may turn out way different than expected.
"A picture says a thousand words", true... but an "editied" picture can say a thousand correct words.

I have director and it's cool as heck. There are folks out there making serious money using it...but it is not cheap...just go to macromedia and find out...butif the school does not have it there is a great place to buy software for students cheap....www.journeyed.com. there are others out there too and as long as you can show student id...it's very inexpensive!

Dave, I think ya misread my incomplete thought. =)
I can understand the need for Photoshop in journalism (I said that part), but I dont see the need for interactive multimedia (Director) unless it's web journalism and ya dont mind making readers wait for a download to see your story. =)
I've got a few photoshop enhanced images over on the Porfolio table.. check em out, you might like them. =)
