Some time ago, and I don't remember where, I saw info on some type of chemical pigeon repellant. I believe it was some sort of coating for potential roosting areas that on contact with pigeon's feet would cause discomfort or burning or something like that. Maybe this isn't humane and will upset some of the bird lovers out there but my client would like to protect his new dimensional sign from pigeon p**p. Any other ideas!!!
Thanks in advance and Happy Signing.... Marty

Marty, I can't remember any brand names, but there are several companies that manufacture a metal strip with spikes sticking out of it that you can put on the top edge of signs to keep the birds from roosting on them. Check the trade magazines, particularly Signs of the Times and I think you will find an ad for the stuff.

Hey Marty. Go into your local KFC outlet and get one of those little banks they have there...the ones that look like a miniature statue of Col Sanders. Them things will scare away ANYTHING that has feathers!

Marty we had major problems with pigeons so they called in the pest man and he uses a product like a jel in a caulking gun that disorientates the birds and they don.t come back but doesn't hurt them just makes them look as if they are drunk stager around for a bit

It all sounds more humane than the way my Grandpa used to get rid of dogs making "deposits" at his place... he used to swat their butts with a brush full of thinner! :O They'd literally drag their butts ALL the way home... but they never came back!
I used Si's method to get rid of Woodpeckers that insisted they had to move into my house... just above my bedroom window at oh about 5am!!! I tried metal sheets(for the house- where they were pecking), and scary plastic predator birds, and my cat did her best to help me- leaving the "prize bird at the door", but nothing worked as well as Grandpa's .22!!!
Now pigeons, on a sign? How about a wire running across the top hooked up to a button inside the shop? When they land on his sign he can give them a ZAP! INSTANT Satisfaction and no aim required! (of course we're not talking 220 here... otherwise he'll more than bird poop to worry about)

The Nixalite strips we used were made of needle sharp spikes of stainless steel. They will put a stop to the roosting. But, birds are creatures of habit. They go back to the same roost time after time, I'm told, using their sense of smell. They recommend that you thoroughly clean any droppings and, of course, scent fromt the sign before installing the Nixalite. The Reason is that during their initial attempts to land on their familiar roost, they can bend the little spikes over. You then must re straighten them until all of the birds landing there get "initiated". I imagine each bird only lands once but, then the spikes are already bent. The Nixalite spikes are good, though, and last a long time.
There is another brand of birdspikes called "Bird Be Gone" made of plastic which spring back after the birds attempt to land. They are very sharp and work very well too.

Perch yourself a very realistic looking owl on the roof near the sign and you won't see any more pigeons. Make sure you use a species of owl native to your area. Pigeons totally freak when they see an owl. Just in case you want to get rid of prarie dogs, use a red-tailed hawk...oh, sorry....that's a Texas problem.
