I dont usually complain about being undercut, but I just lost a job that I really wanted to do, it would have been a nice project. It is a 4' x 6' double sided sandblasted cedar sign with carved and gilded house on both sides. 3 color paint for borders and text. fancy contour cut. installed on 8" x 8" posts that will have a custom curve on one side. I bid it at $4000.00 and thought that was a bit low. He just told me he is having it done for $1700.00!!!! Am I off my rocker? what would you charge for something like that?

Your price sounds about right to me. The guy'll never get a top-notch sign at that price.
Sorry you lost the job. Give it 4 or 5 years 'til the other sign breaks down and call the guy back and say 'nyah-nyah' !

Brian.......not fun huh? That is why I moved out of the Redmond area. There were too many sign shops in the area that wanted to work for nothin.

Brian, makes ya sick don't it? Sounds like they're either desperate, have no skill, or just doing it as a hobby.. Your price sounds right to me. I'd say between $3762 and $4380 is what I would charge, without seeing the detail.
Perhaps the finished product will tell everything.

That price works out around $40 per square foot and pricing the second side at 70%. That's less than half what I'd begin to charge without gold.

Brian, when the lowballer finishes the job, go inspect it. I'm guessing that you will see that what you offered and what the customer bought are not the same thing. For most of the public, you could paint one shot gold instead of gold leaf and they would not know the difference. Let us know what happens. Vic G
