I run scan disk & dfrag, prob once a week. Never had many problems with it till this week though. It is restarting way too many times & twice this week, I've just stopped after about an hour of running scan disk.
I have turned off everything I can at the bottom right of the screen & when I do a ctrl. alt. delete, i get like 12-15 programs still running.
Does anyone have a clue which programs you can leave running, or which ones you can delete, without screwing up the comp? Some of the names that are listed are greek to me.
Looking forward to the B.I.G. show in Charlotte this weekend.
Thanks

Well you won't screw up the computer by shutting stuff down, but you'll need to reboot to get them running again. Are you saying scandisk keeps restarting ? If so
I'd shut everything down except rnaapp. Defrag will keep restarting if something changes on the hard drive, sounds like something is accessing the drive. Even a screen saver can do that, I'd shut everything down that you can, try it one at a time if uncertain.

What about running scan disk in safe mode?
If it will run under that, it would be the best choice.

Thanks Jim:

So I can hit ctrl.alt.delete & close everything but rnaapp? I didn't know that! I allways rebot after running scan disk & defrag.
Both programs have allways just started over & over & over etc. again, but this time has been rediculas.

Hope you didn't have any earth quake dammage. I missed the news last night but did hear something about it on the radio & have read some of the posts here. Hurricans is what we get here sometimes. Used to live in Fla. & have been thru several of those.
Thanks for the info.

John,

I had one puter that did the same. The best way is run scandisk and defrag both in safemode. Not only do they not restart, but they actually run a little faster. Since you are rebooting each time anyway, this should not be a problem.

Boot up into DOS (press F8 while the computer is booting up) and select Boot To DOS. Then try running ScanDisk.

If you ran scandisk and it took 4 hrs that's a indication of a deeper problem than software.
Sounds like a direct hard drive problem or possibly even the drives cable is given problems.
I'd back your stuff up on disks or zip disks, and have it looked at by a tech soon. Or you may be sorry.

I run scandisk from dos. Just restart in msdos mode and type in scandisk.exe, It's a lot faster. Hope this helps.

John,

I had the same problem. Drove me nuts until I accessed microsoft support and looked for help on "Disk Defragmenter: Drive's Contents Have Changed: Restarting...". If that is the message you keep seeing (Windows 98) as it attempts to defragment, the other posts are right. One of the suggested solutions from support was to restart the computer in safe mode and start the Disk Defragmenter from there. I use the alternate method:

Start
Programs
Accessories
System Tools
System Information
Tools
System Configuration Utility
Selective Startup
Clear the Check Boxes
"OK" for Computer Restart
Run Disk Defragmenter

Afterwards, repeat all of the above and go back to Normal Startup, click "OK" and your computer will restart with all of your previous settings intact and you are off to the races again.

According to the support page " Many problems running Windows or programs occur because of conflicting drivers, terminate-and-stay-resident programs (TSRs), and other settings that are loaded when your computer starts." I'm not surprised. Sometimes I just have to grit my teeth and clear "unnecessary but beloved" items from the computer just like I do for the shop/office. Hope this helps.

Liz

Scandisk and defragmenter are two different things. Scandisk checks for disk errors, crosslinked files, etc. Defragmenter places the files in a logical order on the drive giving you better disk performance.

disable any screensavers and energy saver manangement. Close everything but explorer and systray with the alt, cntl, del. You have to close each program one at a time.

I hesitate to tell you this, as some folks get carried away with things but here is what I do to run scan disk and defrag.first
go to start button, click on run and type msconfig then click on ok
it will pull up your autoexec bat sys startup etc.
On the general tab click on selective startup.
then click on the startup tab and unselect all the miscellanious programs you find there except for system tray and run= lxdboxxcp.exe
and scan registry (mainly un check aim task schedulers and virus scans and screen savers etc. then reboot, run scan disk and defrag or whatever you want. Then go back to msconfig and recheck what you unchecked and reboot again. You will save yourself hours.

John-- When you run scandisk, are you doing the "standard" or the "thorough"? I've found a difference between the two measured in hours, the "thorough" being the longest, sometimes to the point that the puter shuts down and restarts and also restarts scandisk. Try this (on Win 98) Close as much as you can, go to Start-Programs,Accessories, System tools and select Maintenance Wizard. This does a "short"- or standard Scandisk, and Defrag and Speeds up your most frequently used programs--or so it claims. It seems to do just as it is supposed to. I do this 2-3 times a week, and don't often have too many problems. I assume Win 95 and 3.x probably have something similar. Good luck
