I was chatting to Linda Silver Eagle about school kids using scrap vinyl for art projects and told her about the banner project we had here in Toowoomba.
Local banner maker donated 50 banners, all the local signwriters their scrap vinyl and kids from 12 schools put it all together in a stunning collective art display.
Check out www.banner-art.com Go to "Workshop Gallery" and then "The Really Big Banner Project" samples of the kids work is there.
Actually I think you will enjoy the whole site. Beverley & Victoria are two very talented ladies and good friends of mine. I do all the painting and computer vinyl for them, although most of their work is sewn multi layers of banner material. Definetly a unique style

Yeah, I can vouch for that! The ladies are great, and the really big banner project looked even better, when I saw some of the work the kids did on a certificate that was laminated on Jon's corkboard, for donating vinyl. There was some great artwork created by those kids (from what I could see)
Anyway, that's my two cents worth, From Katie

Thanks for posting the link to the banner website. There was some good work done by those children. I liked the concept of the hands growing on the tree. You often need extra hands when working with vinyl. I can't wait to show it to my 9 yr. old grand-daughter Lindy. I know I sound like the typical grand-mother, but she is a very talented young lady. She is good with her hands and her eye for design is unbelievable for a child! She will enjoy putting the scraps onto a banner. She has been cutting vinyl by hand since she saw the very first scrap when I opened the shop in August. Who knows, I may just have another Katie on my hands, I hope so.

Aw Jon...you beat me to it! You asked in your email if I thought this gang would be interested in seeing this...I came racing here to open a thread that said, "Jon...the answer is yes!"
I think it is so important for anybody to teach or donate when they can, to share the knowledge we've been blessed with. Especially with kids. Thanks for posting! Some folks just might obtain some really dynamic relationships with each other as a result!

Was that meant to be another Katie as in me? I'm flattered. And yeah, the banner projects from the kids are great aren't they?
Here at home, Emma and Hannah, (my little sisters, and sometimes even me, make little sculptures out of vinyl. We have a cat that permanantly sits above the sterio, that Emma made quite a while ago... cute lil thing So there, another great idea on what to do with scraps... though that one is pretty old, it's still fun to make things with it
