Go fer it! It's just like sandblasted signs, except ya don't have to do all that filling and sanding! Make sure it's clean, no wax, etc....tape it off , size it and apply the leaf...just like on a sign!

Hello Justin, How similar this gilding job will be to the sign work you do depends a bit on the type of products you use. For example, I have traditionally used slow size on signs. The stripng job calls for quick size. I like one-shot. It tacks in less than an hour.
The rolled gold is very nice for stripes but its not absolutely necessary. You can use regular leaf if you have it handy. When I stripe in leaf on vehicles, I tape it off with fine line and simply fill in with size. Peel the tape right away or there will be wet size on the edge that will burn through when you spin.
I use the spin tools in a drill for a magnificent spin. They are aailable through Quill Hair and Ferrule.
You will also have to clearcoat the stripe. I've been using the urethanes but the new one-shot UV clear seems to work well so far and its easy to use. Two coats seems to give better gloss and I expect will last longer outdoors.
Next you are faced with the outline. Sometimes, the gold edge is not perfectly clean and if its a fussy job, it will need an outline. I tape off about an eight inch away from the gold (don't tape onto the gold!)and let the striping brush ride up against the edge of the gold. You will be surprised at how easy it is to get a nice line next to the gold with a sword striping brush when you have the tape guiding you on one side.
Good luck and Have fun.
