I have been taking a woodworking/handtool class and have become efficient with a set of marples straight chisels. I now would like to start carving my own signs rather than always job them out to a CNC machine. Three reasons- cost effectiveness, creative control during the process, & the fun of it. What tools should I start with- Brand, shape, type etc. and what can I expect to pay for these tools. Would used ones be fine? or should I get a "beginners" set. (I'll stop with the questions now)

Yeah, well..... Since I'm waiting for my daughter I may as well answer a few. Mine are all from the 50's. All Scheffields and all top of the line. Whatever brand you buy, you're not a beginner. Get the top of the line and you'll not regret it.

I too an very interested in beginning a carving niche (wood, HDU, etc.). If not for business, at least for myself. It looks like too much fun not to at least try it out.
