Hiya Heads, I'm looking for a manufacturer of inexpensive posterboard or chip board. The intention is to mount digital prints to the posterboard and either set it on an easel or slide it into a frame. I left a message with Crescent, but I get the impression that their product may be too good for what I need. I'm looking to buy direct because I'll be buying at least 100 sheets at a time on a regular basis.
Thanks in advance,
Checkers

the least expensive paperboard product is called "chipboard". its grey, or grey-brown, and is used by printers. it the cardboard that you find at the back of most notepads, for instance. you can buy chipboard from a printing paper distributor. Look up "paper - distributors" or "wholesale" in your phone book. Kelly Papers is one big national distributor.
There's also corrugated cardboard that's made with a white facing material. its really cheap, and comes in 4x8 sheets. Look up "packaging" in the yellow pages.
if you want a whiter board, then "railroad board" is probably the next grade up. Its chipboard with a colored paper face. it comes white as well as in a variety of basic colors. Paper wholesale companies sometimes carry this, otherwise you'll need to get it from an art supply store.
The next grade is "poster board" which i've only ever seen at art stores. You could order up 100 sheets from Dick Blick (dickblick.com), but the freight gets pretty steep. I'm guessing you could work a deal with a local picture framer or art supply store and ask them to split an order. (I think its 250 sheets/carton).

If you are looking for the cheap white kind everybody used for school projects its called railroad board. We buy it by the case from our local Michaels Arts & Crafts store for 24 cents per 22" x 28" sheet. They give us break on teh price since we buy the whole box. They also keep enough of it in stock that we've never had to order it from them.
If you don't have a Michaels near you its also at www.misterart.com. I think they charge about 30 cents per sheet.

I use what the political signs are screenprinted on and then stapled over the wire stakes. Its called STAYWHITE and I paid $.22 for a 22x28". I get it from Wensco. Here in Michigan, they have a location in Detroit and one in Grand Rapids and will probably ship to you. Try their website. www.wensco.com

I forgot to tell you that we also mount on foamboard and then add this nice trim that we notch and then wrap around the print and glue on. The trim comes in flat black, gloss black, chrome, gold, white, red, blue. Maybe more, I just don't know. I think that I get it from outwater plastics but I don't rmember for sure. I can look later if you need me to.

Thanks for the replies people. Railroad board seems to be what I'm looking for and I left a message with our traditional printer to see if he would help with a local source. In the mean time, I'll check the additional leads. I was hoping to get into the 25-50¢ range and you guys came thru, as usual.
Havin' fun,
