Got a few questions. I have a job where I need to make a outdoor sign for a race tracks sponcer. They want signboard (MDO) I guess is what its called. How does this stuff hold up outside? Does it come colored your do you paint it before you letter it? If so whats the best way to prep/paint it.Sorry if theses are lame questions but i usally letter race cars.
Thanks for your help.

This is a staple material for most commercial shops. MDO is really just exterior plywood with a smooth laminated surface, (one side or both sides), that prevents "checking" or premature surface failure. I purchase it from a local wholesaler that offers it in 4x8 as well as 4x10 sheets, in thicknesses of 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4" (which I find to be overkill). I always buy it factory primed. Once it is primed I give the surface and edges two coats of bulletin enamel with a foam roller. An economical, durable substrate.

Steve,
I used to use a lot of MDO. I've switched to Alumalite for most of my signs now so I don't have to prep them.
I found the absolute best primer to use on MDO is XIM 400 Clear.
Redstone Arsenol Military Base used to require that all their MDO signs be primed with XIM.
The stuff is great, makes them last and last.
Prime them with XIM 400 Clear, fill in the edges, put a coat of blockout white, sand a little and a nice slick coat (or two) of background enamel. You can sleep at night and know your sign ain't peelin'.
Have fun,
Bob
