We currently have a customer that we do a lot of engraving for( corian, brass, aluminum all usually customer provided). Right now we charge them per sq. ft. for whatever may need to be engraved, logos or just copy( to cover man hours plus wear and tear on the bits & machine). I think sometimes we are loosing out this way because the time it takes to engrave a logo is much less than it takes to do 4 or 5 lines of copy that take up the same area.
I guess what I'm looking for is maybe a better way to price this type of work.
by the way we are doing the engraving on a Gerber Sabre 408 router if that will make any difference. Thanks for your advice.

TJ, if you are using Composer, there is a measure tool in the display drop down. It will tell you the perimeter inches of all the items selected.
To get routing time in minutes, take perimeter inches divided by inches per minute times the number of passes. Add about 20% for machine moves. Then add your table setup and removal time. Multiply this by your machine time rate to determine your machine time price. Your art and other finishing factors are, of course, additional.
This gives you an appoximation in that very clean art routs faster and lots of nodes routs slower. After a while you can look at the art in node mode and bump your numbers up or down based on the volume of nodes.
Time a few jobs to get confidence in your calculations.
We just finished a very large job, 1280 square feet of raw material, and the estimates prepared this way worked out very well.
