I have "XP home" that came on my laptop and I like it...I have Win 2000 on my desktop..I like it too, but there is a memory leak problem that will lock the puter up when doing intensive node editing in CorelDraw.

So...I am going to buy Win XP and install it on the desktop. My question is...What are the benefits of XP Pro vs.the Home edition? Here in Canada the upgrade for home is $150 and upgrade for Pro is $300. I know I sound like a price shopping customer but what the heck...$150 buys a lot of beer! [Smile]

I was told the basic difference is in how many pc's you can network with xp home,... if its over 5 ya have to use xp pro,...that being the primary difference.

Dave,

Don't quote me on this but I believe the Pro has extra features for multimedia type stuff like video editing, MP3 type junk, CD burning etc.

Like I said though, don't quote me on that.

There are a few reasons to go XP Pro over Home--

Greater Security if that's important to you, more network capability, ability to access your XP computer from any remote Windows computer, to name a few.

Here's a link that might help.Comparing XP Pro and Home [Smile]

Dave, My wife's computer has XL on it, and locks up all the time in Word. The other day it locked up trying to start burning a CD. I've been thinking about going to the 2000 Pro. Is that the only problem you have with it? I have ME and it really sucks.

I've found 2000 pro to be the most stable platform I've used yet. I must say I haven't given XP pro a trial, I have tried and discarded XP home (it came with the last three computers I've bought).
Dave I've found turbomem to be a great utility for defraging and freeing up memory on the fly.

XP Pro advantages come to light when networking many machines together. A few more security features as far as networking goes.
My wife has XP Home, and it seems stable, although she is not an intensive user.
If you are getting memory leaks using Corel, or any other program, which will hang your machine, there is a utility you can use.
Its in Start/Accessories/system tools/resource meter. I run it (minimized in the system tray (where your clock is )) and it will show you what your resources are at. The colours will change from green to red when you get below a certain percentage. If at that time you save your work and close your program, the resources will be re-allocated. Then just re-start your program and carry on. This is not a fix, but it should prevent freeze-ups and reboots.
I personnaly still use WIN 98 second edition, and have no desire to upgrade.
My kids have ME, and I hate that with a passion. Had to re-load it last night, the oldest lost all his homework, not a happy camper.
