Women's Football Final Weeks Offers Enticing Match-ups

There are many charming elements that separate women's football from the rest of the football world, but perhaps none is more compelling than "The Big Game." More often than not, a big women's football game lives up to the hype and expectations.

As the 2003 season playoff races heat up, women's football will offer fans a potpourri of must-see Saturday night games. But with so many games and so little time, a fan needs a source to help him or her decide which are worth watching. Toward that end, the NWFA offers a guide to some of the more intriguing match-ups for the remaining three weeks of the season, focusing exclusively on the playoff race, and touching on some of the less-obvious choices.

Saturday, May 31st (Week # 8) will have some powerhouse match-ups with # 7 Philadelphia at # 6 Connecticut: Philadelphia will be playing Connecticut for the second time; Connecticut opened the 2003 season with a 12-7 win over Philadelphia. If Philadelphia wants to show the nation they indeed are playoff contenders, then what better way to do it than by knocking off the mighty Crush. Both football organizations are among the elite in women's football, on and off of the field.

# 8 Asheville heads to # 13 Nashville The loser of this game could find themselves on the outside looking in come playoff time. This wild card playoff showdown features two of the league's most consistent teams. But even if Asheville get past Nashville they still have Chattanooga on the schedule, though they would have the tie breaker over Nashville.

On Saturday, June 7th (Week # 9) there are some great match-ups with Philadelphia at Massachusetts. This is a rematch from two weeks prior...when Philadelphia spanked Massachusetts in Philadelphia. Now it is Philadelphia's turn to travel, let's see if they do as well on Massachusetts home turf. Columbus at D.C.: Just how good will these two Mid Atlantic Division foes be? We will find out here, when the Columbus - D.C. rematch takes place. The Divas defeated Columbus 30 - 22 back in week five. Columbus will be seeking some revenge, but D.C. is still protecting possible home field advantage throughout the playoffs aspirations.

On Saturday, June 14th (Week # 10), the final week of the 2003 season will bring fans a huge game with # 3 Detroit at # 2 Cleveland: They don't get any BIGGER than this! Obviously, this game is among the biggest of any season as this rivalry resumes. Cleveland will be looking to defeat Detroit by 8 plus points and wrestle the Division Title away from the defending NWFA Champions. Not only is Detroit the defending NWFA Champions, Cleveland will be looking to avenge a 7-0 opening game loss. Now Cleveland will be expected--yes, expected--to bounce back from that humbling setback. Losing to Detroit in Detroit is one thing. Losing to Detroit at home--something that is not going to happen--would be quite another. Chattanooga goes to Asheville: Originally scheduled for week # 9 (June 7th). What an exciting end of the season game with these two red hot teams. Too bad you won't be able to find this one on even the most sophisticated satellite setups. Next year you will on the Football Network. This Southern Division showdown features two of the League's premier defensive units. Chattanooga is cruising to the Division title but needs this victory to keep home field advantage possibilities alive, while Asheville is still jockeying for a wild card playoff spot. D.C. at Baltimore: A must win situation exists for Baltimore if they want a lock on making the playoffs. A 5-3 record, with Columbus holding the tie breaker, could leave Baltimore out of the playoffs. Baltimore fell to D.C. 24-0 in week 2. The Divas need the victory to keep home field advantage hopes alive. Alabama at Pensacola: This one is simple to sum up: Pensacola with one of the NWFA's top offenses, versus Alabama who will counter with their National Championship form defense. If Pensacola's offense proves best, then who knows. Pensacola could be on their way to Nashville for the NWFA Championship Game. Don't laugh, Pensacola has a truckload of talent on offense. But this is a virtual must-win game for Pensacola if they want to retain home field advantage throughout the playoffs in the South Conference. Massachusetts and Chattanooga are play off bound but both have byes the last week of the season. These two teams will have an extra week to get healthy and prepare for their playoff opponent.

The National Women's Football Association has 29 teams playing in the 2003 season with eight additional teams already licensed for the 2004 season. For additional information on the NWFA please call (615) 860-4084 or visit our website at www.womensfootballassociation.com.
