A developer and homebuilder called about a job-site sign last week. His first comment was that he did NOT want a typical "real-estate" type sign; he does very upscale homes and had a specific location in mind.
He suggested a general budget of $500, then said he was interested in an oval sign such as we were working on for another customer (a molded "super-stock" sign blank) mounted on a decorative iron frame. I showed him some samples and suggested gold leaf; in the end he agreed to a sign and frame combo for $1000. One Thousand Dollars... for a JOB SITE SIGN! Needless to say, it's not your everyday jobsite sign, but it was also double his initial budget. And there was discussion about future development projects and subdivision monument signs... a little "upselling" ca go a long way.

Way kewl Cam! You said the customer wanted a sign similar to one you were working on for another client. How did they see it? Were they in your shop? Does a "live" sample work better than pictures for the iron work? I sold iron brackets only once or twice. Each time I had to offer it to the customer, as most don't don't even think about it 'till I offer. Jim D.

To answer James' questions: The client came to my shop and saw another sign in progress, and was then shown ironwork samples.
We have found that while photographs will sell signs, actual samples are better, which is why we have them. As far as ironwork is concerned, the pictures don't do it justice; it's far more a "touch and feel" (and LIFT) item to sell.
The sign was approx 3'x4'. I'm going to photograph it in place; I'll post later if I have a moment.

I can't believe it.......I just got 945.00 for an A-Board. And then I talked them into a couple corex signs for 1200.00 each too. And they were 18x 24's. Man I am good.

I wouldn't know, Cheryl. I don't sell corex signs. Maybe they get those from some other shop; I wouldn't know, since I don't concern myself with being competitive, or what other shops charge, or any of that. My clients come to me for what they can't get elsewhere, at any price... that would be me.

All I can add is that form some of the inspiration I have received from Cam's acheivements in the selling arena I have secured 2 jobs this week that I asked and received a budget from the customer, and a really nice design fee.
Both jobs were to be intricate signs and required design time, both fees were 250.00 each and are seperate from the sign.
Now I look forward to designing to my best because I know I am getting paid for it.
Just think if I didnt ask I would be designing for free again and feeling uncompensated for it. and I live in a mill town.
go figure!!!!!!!!!
