My client (bro-in-law) has a two-sided billboard type sign at his place of business which is 24'x8'. It is covered with 12 shhets of 1/2'' MDO (overlaid on the face sides only). The MDO was put on with nails, is rotting around the edges badly, and four of the sheets have blown off.

He enquired about putting a "bag" over it. I told him that I thought the graphics would only have a life of about three years but wasn't sure. I did voice my opinion that the rotten MDO would have to come off either way.

One of my competitors uses some kind of painted masonite or "showerstall board" as faces for his big signs but I'm not too keen on that. Wouldn't aluminum be better?

The boards on the signframe are horizontal 2x6 on 30'' centers so I told him that .040 aluminum would be a mite thin unless some more boards were added between them. Would you leave the frame as is and use .080?

Really, he wants it as his permanent sign so wouldn't the "bag" be considered temporary? What's the best, but most cost effective substrate for this situation?

Sounds like poor ol' Bo'inLaw went with the "Low Bidder"!!!!!!
The rotting edges are from not sealing the edges properly. Panels blowing off are from not enough support.

IF you are going to use MDO....use 2 sided laminate and seal the edges (see some of the previous posts)!!! paint BOTH sides properly, AND add some vertical supports, no matter what substrate you use!!!!!!

Sounds like a tough situation...do it the same way and the family is going to accuse you of shoddy worh, and do it properly, you will be accused of gouging him!

[Eek!]

hey wayne......i owe ya....heheheheheheh nice visit the other day.....since the boards are startin to go i would go with alum. call over to cameron ashly alum. and see what they get for .050 or .060 sheets. i normally use .040 white and it comes 4x10 for $40. if you use a heavier gauge, then the wood background will give it enough support to last another 4-5 years. or replace all the boards with pt sheets of plywood and still cover with alum.

NO NO NO, SI, my Bro-inlaw ain't that way at all. I've been doing work for him for over 15 years and my name ain't MUD yet, nor do I intend it to be so. He just leased the place, the existing sign is disintegrating, and so he called us.

The only wood that I want to use on any sign is redwood, cedar on sandblast/carved, or PT on framework. However, MDO signs that I have built in the past(primed/painted both sides and edge sealed) are outlasting my competition's by far.

Joe, It was nice meeting you as well. Thanks for the hospitality! Cameron & Ashley is on the Circle in Dothan AL. About 40 miles from here. I'll check them out.

I would choose MDO properly prepared AND properly attached. If you hit a nailhead so hard you dent the wood then your doing it wrong. A little nailing care goes a long way towards the longevity of the sign. Remember, your goal is to try to preserve the watertight integrity of the wood. I like to put up the boards primed, and then roll on the background so it covers the nails, but if you prefer to letter in the shop you can go to the trouble of painting all the nail heads after you put it up.

I think I would give an option of redoing the sign with alumacore panels. I have had some up for 5 years in the Florida sun and they still look great. I'm very impressed with that material. It does take longer to install though, as you have to be real careful handling and also having to use screws. Their baked on finishes have a long warranty and come in colors, so maybe you can use a color and save some time there.

Wayne, with prepainted MDO costing 55.00 a sheet and Dibond costing 82.00 a sheet. You could cover it with that for 216.00 more. It is very easy to hang, and gives a totally professional look. It won't warp from expansions like the solid thin aluminums.

I can get 10mm Alumacorr for 78.95/sheet colors for 92.31/sheet. "PolyMetal" (comparable to Dibond) costs me $98.50(3mm) and $137.85 (6mm).
Jack, where do you get that Dibond at $82??? That's a good price.

NO IT AIN'T NEITHER!! I SEEN IT IN DOTHAN!!

They evidently have at least two locations. The one I know about is on the Ross Clark Circle in Dothan, Alabama. One of my local sign buddies buys his metal from Cameron & Ashley.

I buy my aluminum from AlumaPanel in Cumming, GA. AlumaPanel delivers here once a week for $10 with a $100 order. Free with a $200 order. Thanks though, I'll keep them in mind.

Oh.......I forgot my sign, Joe. Could you ship it to me? [Big Grin]

Thanks for the offer, Joe.
On this one I intend to order the aluminum, apply the graphics/lettering on my easel, standing flat-footed on terra firma instead of fighting with it at 12' off the ground. Then, I'll put the 8- 12x4 sheets on with my cordless drill and some hex-head screws. Then, maybe I'll finish in time to go deer huntin' with my bro in law.
