We am probably doing some more work at a place we have worked before. The previous job was extensive...outrageous really. Now they want it extended from where we left off. We went back to see about the job this past week. But this time we dealt with a new face there. He was from the acccounting department.
His mandate was to continue the work we started a few years ago... but he wants to spend a lot less money. Nothing fancy he says... just continue the work as before but on a much smaller budget. He says to not bother with any detail... nobody sees it anyway.
And a few miles from us a fellow tried to build a copy of our golf facility... again with the goal of saving money his primary goal.
Both these guys know WHAT we want to do do. But they miss two very important things... HOW AND WHY.
The how and why are the most important facets of the equation. Miss these two points and what we build will be a cheap copy.... nothing more. THe pieces we build will fulfil a function... barely, but nothing more.
Both the accountant guy and this other fellow try to do the same thing as what I did without understanding the basics of design... HOW and WHY.
There are reasons behind every design decision I make. These guys and many others think we have to simply fill a space when we build something.... But much more must be considered.
I think about relationships to other elements around... how does it read... does the piece serve to tell the story... and a thousand other things.
I see so many similarities to things I see in signs around me (done by others)
Good design isn't concerned so much by WHAT. Simple words stuck on a board. But these other two questions must always be answered HOW and WHY. Anybody can solve WHAT... it takes a lot more experience and knowlege to solve the HOW and WHY effectively.
This is the essence of good design in my opinion.
