Hi guys,
I have 2 questions if anyone has the time......I just spent way too much time trying to wrap a 4" stripe around the back of a large dump trucks cab......... Just couldnt turn the corner without distorting, wrinkling and all other kinds of nasty stuff to it......... I tried heating it wet applic, dry applic just couldnt do it.. any suggestions ? ( I used oracal HP vinyl).

My other question is....... where do I find, or is there such a thing as a roll , similar to vinyl, that I can put through the plotter...... and use as a paint mask.. if so how would it release from the liner..... and where can I get/buy some.......... I am still a rookie. cant you tel ........

Thank You....

I named my dog "Egypt" cause every time he leaves the room........ he leaves a pyramid.........

OP!

It isn't too often that we agree with one another...and it almost pains me to say this...but you are (gasp) right! [Wink]

We strictly recommend using cast (not calendered) films for applications involving any kind of compound curve. Cast films have certain properties of elasticity that you simply will not find in a calendered film. This is often referred to as "conformability".

OP is right about Gerbermask II, as well...fantastic paintmask.

While you are ordering that Gerbermask II from your local Gerber dealer, ask for a sample of some Gerber/3M 220 Series Cast Vinyl for the ultimate in conformability.

the back is probably straight, but the sides may taper in? Try to fold a piece of paper around the corner, tape it in place, then draw the 2 level & parallel lines 4" apart. take off the paper & you probably have a shape slightly more like a boomarang. cut that for corners (flip one), then overlap straight 4" stripes on each side & back

Doug has the best solution. Trying to "conform" even cast film around a compound curve like you describe will usually result in having to "pull/stretch" the material to the point where it will reduce it's width too.

I have also taped the paper on the curved surface, drawn the lines, scanned the paper, digitised the curved lines and cut the curved vinyl on the cutter. That way ends up with smoother more accurate edges, and if you are doing four or five trucks it is actually quicker.
