Has anyone used OneShot on powder coat? I have a customer that wants an antique safe striped and lettered and he is thinking about having it powder coated instead of paint. I am curious if anyone knows how well this will work.

I have done enamel striping on powder coated tool boxes. I always did a scratch test with a fingernail. Also clean with some enamel reducer on a very soft cloth, then alcohol. Careful not to dull the finish. I never gave a guarantee.
I am not an expert by any means but I know that the powder is melted onto the metal with relatively low heat, which makes me suspicious.
I think "Powder Coat" has become a buzzword these days because it is a new technology becoming available to the general public. Personally I like paint, especially if the object being restored was originally painted.

You're right. Powder coating is a very hard surface. I scuff where ever I have to paint and I don't expect much. So far, though It has stayed on the bikes and motorcycles. Be sure to use 1 shot catalyst. Why powder coat the safe? Is he expecting a great deal of wear on it? Paint would be much safer.

That is what I said, "Why powder coat a safe that is going to be indoors?" but he is a metal fabricator and thinks powder coat is the best thing in the world. I said it might be but maybe at the expense of your lettering and striping. I'm still trying to talk him out of it.

The powder coating years back never posed a difficulty, but the recent stuff coming my way won't even take vinyl. I've needed to scuff it rather heavily with a 420 grit first. Glad it wasn't a gloss finish.

I am using 1-shot metallic gold paint on powder-coated cast iron pub table bases and haven't had any problems. It looks like a black automotive finish to me. I used mineral spirits to clean off paint mistakes.

The only time I have trouble with Powder Coated items is if they get pressured washed.
