I've installed rolls of vinyl over rivets but never a digital print. Does the extra thickness of a digital print with lamination make it more difficult? Impossible? More time consuming? Any tips if it is any different than cut high performance vinyl would be appreciated. I'm guessing I shouldn't use control tac vinyl as there should be strong initial tack going around rivets.

Dave, I am by no means a fan of vinyl installation nor do I consider myself a seasoned installer, I do it only when necessary. But I had a client project come up and they wanted large prints installed over rivets. I bought a "RollePro" tool. Believe I got it from Fellers, and it was about $60.
It is a dense foam roller that fits nicely in your hand. Heat up about 18" of material over the rivets and one pass with this thing and you are done. Material was 3M control tac with the air release, laminated. The best $60. I ever spent.
I still don't like installing but I no longer have apprehension about rivets.

Thanks Joe. The guy brought the trailer out and I can remove the rivets because they are actually torx screws. If I center the graphic I will have a seam to deal with. I think I'll try to talk them into moving it off the seam.

No need to move it away from the seam. If you're using an air release vinyl media you really shouldn't have any installation issues at all regardless of seams or rivets. I recommend Orajet 3951RA or 3551RA w/ 290 laminate or 3M IJ180 C or IJ380C.

I remove screws when I can, and go over them when I can't. I go over seams, then cut the vinyl along the seam to allow for movement. Then take a rivet brush to the seam to be sure everything is pushed down well.

a lot of the trailers.....dont have TORX screws but are 8 points sided, and unless you look closely, you would say its TORX(6 points). after chasing half a day on one of these to find the right screw bit........i had it all the time....A 4 POINT SQUARE DRIVE.....fits perfectly in the 8 point!!!!!! Joe...Here in Canada we call the "square head" screws "Robertson" head screws. They've been around for decades here and were invented to confuse "Yankee's"!!!
On a serious note, you are correct, a lot of those trailer screws are intended for Robertson drivers and like Torx screws, they tend to be less vulnerable to "stripping" since the walls of the screw heads are vertical versus the tapered walls of a Phillips head screw.

the 8 pointed is NOT A ROBERTSON.....a robertson is a SQUARE 4 POINT....and an 8 point is a DOUBLE SQUARE....yes a robertson bit will work. [IMG][/IMG]
