Aren't these things wonderful when they are working?

Epson Stylus Photo 1400. I've been using re-filled ink from a supplier from ebay. That's not likely the problem because I've been using the same vendor for a year with no issues.Light blue ran out a couple days ago and when I plugged in a new one, it wasn't recognized. After trying all I could think of or could find online, I tried putting in another cartridge, thinking maybe it was just a bum unit. No luck. I've even uninstalled and reinstalled the driver.

Has anybody here had something like this happen and have a tip to get it going again? This printer was running like a gem until this.

I think about Timi every so often...and this has been one of those times. Miss that guy!

The blue was working when it ran out of ink and needed replaced. When I replaced it, the printer acted towards the new, full one with an x over it in the printer utility and a message that I still needed to install a new blue cartridge.

Eventually, I ran out of troubleshooting ideas and did put ANOTHER blue cartridge into the printer. But, that one still did the same thing. The "ink out" red light is on and the printer utility still says to install a new blue.

Printer issues and high blood pressure don't mix well. [Eek!]

the chip is sending the wrong info.. Ask your supplier how to fix it.

Did your printer do a firmware update?

I would take out the cartidge that the print dose not recongnize then unplug the print from the wall , let the print sit for 5 minutes, then plug the print back and let the print run and it will give you message that it needs the blue cartidge "load the cardige in the printer" now turn the print off from the booton and turn back and see if this works.
Good luck!

I'll contact the supplier about that this morning.

I uninstalled the epson software and then reinstalled, after the problem presented itself. Yesterday, uninstalled the newest version. Instead of installing again, I used Apple's Time Machine backup of the entire printer folder from exactly the way it was on Sept.2. That should be plenty and way before the issue. Shouldn't the firmware be a part of that folder, or are they stored somewhere else...preferences??

My last experience with Epson was my last forever. I got a message from my Epson that the printer had reached the end of it's serviceable life. It wouldn't work at all. I tried everything. I finally called Epson and they said when the printer determines that enough cleaning cycles have been used to fill the absorbent pad with ink, the printer stops working...for good. I said why can't the pad be replaced with a new one. Nope, not possible. I threw it out but before I did I took it apart enough to look at the pad. It was about half full of ink, half of it was still white. How's that for planned obsolescence. I went with a Brother laser printer and will never go back to ink jet.

i just went thru that with my HP K-850. bought new in 2000. apparently they have somekinda stop working implanted in the firmware.
i ran this printer with HP carts for the 1st 4-5 years. got tired of paying $38 X 4 for carts went to CIS INK bulk ink replacement. it worked great, then the chips on their carts...al started to give me nonworking status. i bought 4 refilled carts....removed their chip, and put them on the CIS carts.....and it worked fine.....then for no reason the printer decided to eject the cyan cart..from its locked in position. i messed with it for a bout a week, dumped ink all over the floor(oak)and then dumped the whole damn thing in the dumpster!!!!!
sister in law went to some garage sale picked up 2 printers for $5..........1 was a cannon MP-190. 2 carts. so i went on line to see if i could refill them. got the black working fine. had to buy a tri color cart $28.00. only prints 8.5 X 11.....and does as good a job as that old HP K850 DID. and i can refill the existing carts......TILL IT DECIDES not to work anymore.

Sal, I followed your directions and still didn't do anything. Contacted the vendor and they are sending me a couple new LtBlue cartridges and think I had a bad batch. Hope that does the trick.

Dave Sherby– great minds think alike...
This summer, after 15 years of Epsons, I swore off Epson and got a Brother laser, too! Not looking back.

Same here...got tired of buying ink tanks and having clogged nozzles. Have a b/w brother for emails, and a 13 x 19 Okidata 9600 for proofs.
Been buying off brand toners for the last couple years...much cheaper, and still print well.
Eventually you do have to buy image drums, etc...which can get a little pricy. It's a good idea to check cost of consumables before buying one.

i stated earlier bout CIS INK SYSTEMS. is such an improvement over buying ink carts. most of the printers they have this conversion for are under $50. once you have the bulk ink tanks to their carts....you can buy 4 bottles of 4 ounce ink, all comparable to OEM INKS.......for $30. if you have a printer they list......give it a shot.....you wont be disappointed.
wife has an EPSON 1430 13 X 19 ARTISAN PRINTER. 6 COLORS. the replacement carts filled with ink are $41.99. with 6 bottles of ink $79.00.

Couple year ago I had a technician came and took a look of my Epso, I pay attention on what he did also he mentioned to me that some time you have to wipe the memorie and star over just as when you bought the print for the first time ,so he did what I mentioned above, he also mentioned to me press two of the buttos on the top of the print which I do dot remember very well now, so that will help to restor the printer too , I never try that way since the other way was easy for me. Sorry did not work you Don, hope the new inks helps to get the printer to work.

I had to buy cartridges for my Canon a few months back. WM quit carrying them, so I went to Office Whatever. The only thing they had was refilled stuff. I had to have something. When I installed them, the printer would never recognize them. It does print though, just with the out of ink warnings.
Reminds me, I need to track some down on line.

geo, the canons are really easy to refill. you can go on you tube and see how to drill a small hole on the cart, and since you go to the VA see if one of the nurses there can give you a couple disposable syringes with needles. they work great for refilling ink carts. and the canon carts you just put a piece of vinyl over the hole in the cart after you fill it. you can buy the ink from CIS INK...

Received replacement cartridges from my ink supplier, and everything is fine. It was just a bad batch of cartridges (bad chips)...as Curtis had guessed.

Wonder if I can sell Sherby a brand new, still in the box large format laser printer? (kidding...I'd use that rolling on the floor graemlin, but know I wasn't THAT funny.)

Just happy it's back up and running, and this will be the first thing I'll suspect if it happens again. Getting a 6 pack of inks for about $8 total, and OEM is over $100, so if I had to go back to OEM, the printer would have to go back in the box.

Thanks for the input...everybody.
