Our new MultiCam CNC plasma cutter was installed last week which was pretty exciting. As with our CNC router which we bought ten years ago we booked no paying work for the machine in the near future. We first have to learn how to use it, explore what is possible and also create some samples to show to future customers. Then we'll run it to the max.
The first test project was a new mailbox for Phoebe and her mom. It couldn't be ordinary of course and Phoebe happens to love dinosaurs. The project is still in progress and the dino will be clutching the mailbox in it's claws. We'll also fabricate a log base on which it will be perched. It measures a little over 12 feet from the tip of the nose to tail.
Yesterday Peter designed up some brackets to hold up the new custom made steel gutters on their house. Simple and elegant they will add a lot of character. This prototype took minutes to design, less than a minute to cut on the new machine. Welding the pieces together took mere seconds. There will be fifty of these required to do the job and the new machine made it easy.
Suddenly every shelf bracket in our shop looks plain and boring. We'll have to fix that. Peter is now designing a set go gates for their backyard which will be stunning I'm sure. And our mind is racing with endless possibilities for the future.
This is going to be fun!

Not ordinary mailbox? That's the understatement of the year. Over the top by a mile would be more like it. Just saying.
Question Dan. Just out of curiosity, the steel slats that act as the spoil board for a CNC plasma, looks like yours are getting chewed up already with the practice cutting. Do hose have to get replaced very often?

The slats on the plasma do get chewed up... think of it as a spoil board on the router. Replacing them will probably happen once or twice each year at most and at the front end of the machine more than the rear as that is where we will do most of our cutting. It is a simple matter of dropping in some steel slats that are sheared to the proper width... a few minutes at most. Only the cross pieces need doing as the lower lengths that run the length of the table aren't cut with the plasma.
We are pretty excited by all the possibilities of the CNC plasma and are currently concept designing for customer's future projects. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities!

. . . THAT'LL discourage anyone tampering with the mail!
We have mailbox issues in the rural south . . . so I want one that rears up and shoots out flames when hit with beer bottles by wooly teens, and/or drunks behind the wheel ... lol
That is completely awesome Dan!

Gold would certainly be nice Ron but I believe the budget on this project calls for rust.
