Hi Diane, This is pretty much my default forum for signs. There is such a wealth of information here. With the sign industry changing and the quality of products constantly being altered, it's nice to have a forum to go to and discuss what others have found out about these changes. Sharing information helps us provide the best we can for our customers and avoid failures whenever possible.

I do go to Signs 101 from time to time.

I also go to CSA, from time to time.

It seems tho, that there's not too much traffic on many of the sites, these days.

Letterville is the ONLY one worth attending. Better info, better artists, better feeling of a community of like minded souls. Stay here, Diane. Check in every day and tell us what fun you have making signs and art!

This one's my favorite and I always check here first, and also visit signs 101.
Don't visit signforums, signweb, or the UK signboards much anymore.

There's often several ways to produce something, and searching the forums can give a lot of perspectives.

I still check in here at least once or twice a week and sometimes more often... don't interact as much as I should. Been many, many moons since I visited any other sign site. Facebook seems to have swiped most the traffic here and I'm guilty of being fairly active there.

As above, or ditto.
I take a look at Signs101 perhaps once every 2-3 months, and the UKsignboards maybe once every 6 months.

I usually check in here a couple times a day, if I have the time.

I might even throw my 2 cents in if I think it will help someone.

Sometimes, it seems there are a few people with 'sign-atudes' - so I get the h--- outta here and let them duke it out.

I miss all those who used to frequent this site.

Other than here, I occasionally check into the "Living Sky Letterheads" site that R.M. told me about.

It has some really nice examples of work by it's members - way to go guys! And it seems like a more user friendly site, insofar as being able to post picture etc. I don't know who set that up - Kelly? maybe, but qdos to whoever did.

Shirley,

Well said......I agree with you about what you call "sign attitudes"......But, still I have been allowed to visit here, for the last 13 years.....That is why I call this place "home".....and I appreciate that.

Besides, I am a sucker for controversy....which is a great mental exercise for an old timer like me.

Here you go:

"Living Sky Letterheads"

The Living Sky Letterheads are a group of Canadian Sign Artists from the Prairie Provinces and beyond. Informally formed in 2004 at the "Living Sky Letterhead ...

Shirley, thanks......The "Portfolio and Gallery" section shows some fantastic work.

Although forums seem to be riding off into the sunset, I still check out about 5 most days. I only look here about once a week on the average.
The Living Sky forum doesn't have much activity, but really never has. Two of the forums I frequent are machine/software forums & I'm one of very few full time signmakers on either of them.

Letterville seems to have attracted some really confrontational people over the years. Some like to see an on-line spat, & even join in .... others just quit participating because it reminds them of Thanksgiving with the in-laws.

This is still my main forum I come to. Been here since early on in it's inception. Boy what a different place it was back then. I check signs 101 every now and then. Seems to be a lot of activity there compared to here. I also frequent a corvette forum, that does have similar issues as Letterville with the spats, BUT the overall freedom to share information overrides the crap. I think that has pushed a lot of newbies in the signs 101 direction.

Not to mention the industry continues to evolve, and seeing as this IS the sign BUSINESS, we either evolve with it or get left behind. And that's not a bad thing depending where we are in our journey.

Facebook has become my social media playground, and I converse with sign buddies on there about things life related besides just signs.

But when it comes to talking strictly shop, this is where it's at for me. Even though I don't log into this forum as much as I did in earlier years, I still keep tabs on things here. This is where I still come to for info regarding our field.

I don't like to spend that much time at the computer chatting. I don't get how folks can keep up with all the forums.

TR (Rodger's) comment reminds me I used to frequent a certain 3D sign forum - but after I was suspended for a month for giving an open critique and helpful (non-rude) layout suggestions to a newbie, I have kept away.

He seemed to be mortally wounded by my frank assistance to repairing by his own disaster which broke every Mike Stevens layout guide, and was a bit of a 'how many fonts can we fit in here' exercise, with a 'lets leave a ton of negative space around the ampersand in its own line for effect', and 'lets put the main name at the top right hard against the margin' or some such stuff I've long since forgotten - it was a year and a half ago or more, I think.

Strangely, some hated what I said to this newbie with more posts to his name than I, but a few of the subsequent posts which did not take offense, agreed totally with my observations, and some said even harsher things than I did, and they were permitted to remain. It was just me who was kicked off, for being the first I suppose to say I wasn't keen on the layout and this is how I'd remedy it and why...

Dan S also left the same forum. It's sad when the Admin has a small mind and a big chip on his shoulder...

I occasionally go back to read some things, but there are very few actual 'real' signwriters commenting much there. There are three or four who are really good there though.

Enroute or SAI have their own forums, but they are fairly dead. I've found it useful a few years ago to read just about every post and solution (if one was submitted) to people's difficulties, as it's helped me with some workarounds with the CNC router when I was starting out and trying to push the parameters.

So, Letterville it is! [Smile]

Letterville is still home and will always be. The LSL forum is quiet, mostly geared towards the group that put on the 2007 Moose Jaw meet, although anyone is welcome there. We are pretty liberal at deleting or moving posts that have any potential to be offensive, but for the most part don't have issues. It never will have, nor was meant to have the exposure that Letterville does.

Yes, Stewie & me both got the boot for offering constructive criticism to a new guy who actually wanted to learn, & asked " what can I improve upon? "
Then, someone fairly well known posted something very rude, & definitely not helpfull in any way, & the moderator was fine with that. When I wondered out loud "why?" ....... poof, every post I'd ever made was deleted! Stewie's fate was similar, as I recall.
However, ol' Sawatzisname was fleeced with the most vile public tongue-lashing I've ever seen on a forum.

I've not been back since, although I take a wee peek every 4 months or so.

Letterville has always been my home and always will. I signed up for Signs 101, visited maybe two times at most. Didn't like it. I tried CSA too. I just couldn't get into their civil war motif. I haven't gone in there for at least 6 months but I used to just to see some great sign examples as they do have some very talented members. I grew up in Letterville along with my sign business so I guess I'm here to stay.

All of these forums have their own particular DNA. I am happy that we have choices. I think that it is easy to stick with who ever brought you to the dance to begin with. Facebook is the Wal-Mart of the forums it is hard to compete against its versatility. Personal friends, sign-groups and the ease at which photos can be shared.
The simpler photo attaching would breath new life into the forums.

Kelly pointed out that there are different bulletin board providers. LSL uses phpBB. I'm not sure which one is used here, but it would worth while seeing if that uploading option is available on this one. I can't imagine any bulletin board host not wanting to build this feature into their boards. They are competing with the likes of FaceBook and will die if they don't evolve. It is possible that it would be too costly or difficult to migrate this board to an upgraded system without losing data or features we have come to know and love.
Maybe Barb or Steve could look into it. Photos and images are so helpful to an industry Board like ours. I would guess that only a small fraction of the members here know how to post pictures on Letterville. Many that do, find it awkward and time consuming. It is increasingly a point and click world. Sad but true.

This is the only sign board for me. I regard everyone here family.

It would just be nice to somehow be alerted via FB that a new post was on Letterville though... to somehow bring the two together. FB has become a one stop alert place for most.

Duncan,

I am not complaining about not posting photos in this forum..........But, in 13 years of visiting this forum, I have not posted a single photograph......I am OK with that.

Still, I love Letterville !

I have to agree with Duncan. General conversation and visiting with friends is what Facebook is basically about. But this is a specialized forum, like some of the other sign-related sites.

Absolutely, we are all friends, and sometimes we have some lively conversations. But I also believe that it's a great and informative place where we can share our knowledge and ask and answer questions about various aspects of the sign business.

Some of these aspects are hard to visualize without pictures or illustrations. This site, like it or not, is not the easiest place I've found to post pictures on....and some people will either stay away, or be hesitant to get involved in any complicated issues or discussions.

I've been here a good while too; and like it very much. But like said above, things need to evolve. This site is no different.

It seems like the best of the best ,
'Old school' , most skilled and creative, cutting edge are here.
This is the one I always go back to.
I used to check Signweb for whatever job postings, etc....but I haven't been over there for a couple of years now

Letterville and Signs101 are my main forum stops. Signs101 is a good place for more technical reference while Letterville just has a nice sign family atmosphere. I don't really understand what you mean about confrontation and attitudes here because I feel just the opposite that this is a very friendly forum...but please don't even explain it, we'll just forget about that part! I'm always busy and though I read over the forums regularly, it's more of a research effort than a social effort for me. By the same token, if I don't feel I can offer a helpful or educational response then I really don't post much unless I have a question. Even though I might not be as familiar to you all, partly due to the fact that I don't have a picture uploaded and since I'm not such a frequent poster, I feel as though you are all good friends. I always appreciate reading all the regular responders posts but sometimes I don't understand how you can find the time, I just couldn't do that.

Those that are on Facebook, I don't really understand how it works or how it is that many people have drifted in that direction. That probably is due to the fact that I don't have a Facebook page, maybe I'd get it if I had one. Do you use personal Facebook pages or do you have business pages that you use?

Does anyone know what happened to 4Edgetalk ? For owners of Gerber Edge printers. It was helpful but I can't seem to log on to it any more.
