I've only used it on an honour board, where I was forced to match the prevoius bloke's use of the same stuff - font & material. I did't bother with edge sealing as it's permanently indoors.

I've used quite a bit recently. For outdoor use, yes to edge sealing.
For thermal printing, I laminate with 3M 8519 overlaminate. My supplier cuts the large roll down to 4 13" wide rolls for me.
For lettering on firetrucks, I print, cut and then weed the gold. Then I laminate it with the 8519. Then I put it back in the plotter and recut it with a 0.1" outline. The effect when applied to the firetruck is that it looks like a clear varnish over the gold. Plus it eliminates the need for edge sealing. If you are using a Gerber Edge with Gerber software, let me know which version of software and I'll send you a file so you can see how I have it set up.
