Somebody sent this to me, check it out. Fairground painter's stunning handiwork Joby Carter is one of the few remaining artists who specialises in signwriting for old-fashioned fairground rides. < http://www.bbc.co.uk/go/em/fr/-/news/magazine-23313762 >

Beautiful work! It's really satisfying to see someone quite young, so accomplished........and so adamant about not being caught up in all the computer-generated stuff being done today.

Disneyland and Six Flags get it. The hand painted signs are part of the visual entertainment. It's not just the ride, but the way the ride is presented. The big sign on top, the individual painted cars, all of the secondary signage around the ride. Printed signs are quite boring and very common. Some of the smaller amusement parks do not understand that aspect of the business. I had a blast working for Six Flags during the time when they purchased the amusement park that I was working at here in Federal Way. I would have probably still be working there, but my own business just grew and grew, so I had to leave.

Well Disney certainly has their fair share of digitally printed signs when I visited there a couple of years ago.. I can certainly produce a Sign thats digitally printed that would rival a lot of so called hand painted signs.. it's not the sign, it's the design! Hey thats a good slogan!..lol but I do agree there is a lot of crap out there.. and I know thats what you meant!

Watching that video makes me appreciate - again - that I had a good teacher when I first wanted to learn sign painting. She taught us how to pick a good brush, loading the brush, pulling and snapping a good stroke, practice, practice, practice, and good layout skills.

The video may be about old-fashoned signwriting on old-fashioned carnival rides but I cdnt view it on my old-fashioned computer. Requires a Flash upgrade my computer cant handle. However I found what I think is the same video on YouTube.
What always irks me about these videos is that they NEVER show the guy doing a complete letter. They show him starting it, with the easy part, and then when he's about to finish off the top and bottom of the Gothic letter, they cut away to show him starting a different letter.

They're probably the same people who got the schools to quit teaching kids how to hold a pencil.
