I've hooked up with a wholesale garment company and a wholesale screen and embroidery company and need help setting up retail pricing. I don't want to be the most expensive guy around but I don't want to leave a bunch of money on the table either.

As an example, I have a client coming for aprons. My cost is $3.35 each. My imprint cost is $1.25 each for a one color and a $22.50 screen charge.

I know there are several here in Letterville that do their own screen printing. You could even be of help just letting me know what you would charge and I could figure markup from there. By the way, the apron quantity doesn't matter because I get case price for any quantity. The screen charge is based on 4 dozen one color imprints. Thanks for any help.

Dave - Glenn would be the best judge. In my mind, quantity *does* matter.

But, if you are going to stock a bunch of aprons with the same image and sell them, I'd probably sell them at $15-$20 apiece.

Are you talking online sales, or store-front? Are you talking aprons with a biz name, or fun stuff?

Glenn???

The apron order is for staff at a theater, but they're also looking at hoodies and caps. These would be ordered in specific quantities by the customer. I won't be stocking anything here at the shop other than possible samples. Fro the aprons, it works out good because I ordered 2 different models years ago for my own staff and myself.

I've been calling Glenn because that's who I thought of too but he's out of the office right now and I have a customer coming in soon.

Sorry about that Dave. I'm short a person today and it's been crazy.

Like Todd said, quantity does matter.

If you can let me know the brand/model of the apron, I'll be happy to generate a price sheet for you based on what we would charge.

Rusty - they will never get me. They operate by 'heat signature'.... and I am no dummy. I learned an important lesson back in the early 80's when watching the original 'Predator' movie starring Arnold Schwarzenneger. He discovered that the Alien was stalking him based upon his only means of visual identification: Heat signature/ mapping.

Arnold beat him by covering himself in 'cool creek-bed' mud. It's kind of messy, but I 'mud-up' every morning with an afternoon touchup.

So far so good. I hear them flying overhead, but they don't know I'm here.

The apron is from BIG Accessories, model APR53
They are going to order 2 dozen so my cost is $4.38 each for the apron, $22.50 screen charge (it's a one color job) and $1.50 each for the screen charge.

But what I was hoping for was more of an average mark up by percentage. For example, here are my imprint costs for a 1 color screen.
1-9 $3.25
10-23 $1.75
24-47 $1.50
48-99 $1.25
100-143 $1.00
144-287 75¢
Then each category drops a dime until you hit 5000 at 40¢

And embroidery is
1-12 80¢ per 1000 stitches
13-24 60¢
25-36 55¢
37-47 50¢
48-999 30¢

So what I was hoping for was to add up costs, multiply by a percentage, possibly a sliding scale by quantity like a certain percentage up to 48 pieces, another percentage to 100 pieces and another for over 100. At least I was hoping it could be that easy.

what kind of profit are looking for? It's not a hard and fast rule, but generally I would double the cost of the garment then add the print charges and other expenses- THEN I would put whatever markup you want to make... so roughly $9.00 for the apron, $1.50 for the print and $1.25 each for the setup...

At $15 each, you would make a profit of $75 for the order- $20 would be a $198 profit...

Then you have to figure in what the "perceived value" of them would be- personally, I would find a quantity in the middle- say 50 would be that price- less quantity would be higher, higher quantity would be cheaper, but at least you have a middle ground to start with where you are at least making some type of profit....

There was a shop here in town that would have jumped at charging 20-25 CENTS more than the actual cost to produce it- maybe $6-$7 range TOTAL (because that is the way Wal-Mart could do it).... they are no longer in business, by the way...

Although we are sorta locked into quantity pricing, I have always hated it- if the customer knows that the price break is at 24, 48, etc., they will order 25, 49, etc- just to get a price break...

the "Perceived Value" approach allows more room to offer "price breaks or discounts" yet still make a profit...

BTW- you said the cost of the apron is $4.38- does that include shipping charges, sales tax, etc. that is expenses that are often overlooked (which is why I double the cost)

That is just the way I do it here- it may not work for everybody, but it makes pricing much easier.

I don't do screen charges and setup fees. My pricing is "all-inclusive".

Don't forget the 'clean up & clean our/reclaim' fee, unless you've built that in too...

On small runs the set up & clean up takes longer than the printing...
