I've got some tin coffee cans I want to keep water standing in for long periods. What can I coat the inside with that will be impervious to water-based paints and will keep the can from rusting? I thoought of marine varnish but I dont know if that's best or would take to the metal. And I dont know if I'd need a primer.

Well, I see upon reading the can more closely that the marine varnish seems to be meant only for wood and not below the water line, so that seems to be out.

You can also check with Eastwood, Dennis. They have a product that you can put in old rusty gas tanks on cars, and it seals the rust in, and stops any existing small leaks. Good stuff.

Or you could get some spray they use on bottom of coolers. It's a coating kind of like tar. Not sure they use many coolers in Frisco, but over in the cental valley you'll see alot of them.
