Any recommendations for gold leaf sizing -- both
fast and slow? And whose your supplier and do the ship?

Thanks in advance.

I switched recently to Rolco slow
it flows nice and levels perfectly right out of the can.It has a long window and the gild comes up beautifully every time.
Never tried the fast...
Not sure where I bought it from,,but who ever it was...the answer is yes, they ship
I will remember about 2days from now....sorry..

I've used Rolco with great success on the advice of several people that didn't like LaFranc size after they took took the lead out. Urban Billmeier at W&B Gold Leaf (Letterville Merchant) in Chicago will ship to you and they have both slow and fast size. Get it while you can though because Urban has told me it is tough to get. Many times he waits months to get a shipment in. Rolco may be in trouble as Urban found out that they laid off their chemist. There's a fairly new company called Dux that is making waves with an aqua size. In fact, Dux hired the chemist that Rolco laid off. It sets up for gilding in less than an hour, but then holds it's tack for 2 days like slow size. The only problem is that it's only been on the market for about 5 years, and Urban has been selling it for about 2 years. Customer feedback shows that they all love it, but it doesn't have that 15 to 20 year proof of durability yet.

By the way, W&B is the last gold leaf manufacturer left in the United States.

I've met Urban and (duh) should have considered him since he was involved in getting the gilder's museum in our hometown.

So, Dave, you're saying the fast set holds its tack like a slow set?

This new waterborne size from Dux holds a 2 day tack after 45 minutes. Urban told me about it. I personally haven't tried it yet.

Give Urban a call. He'll help you out. BTW, he says Rolco's quick size doesn't gel up & skin over in the can nearly as fast as dumb Shot, I mean 1 Shot.

rolco doesnt puddle when you use it on incised letters
I never did like LeFranc...it was too thick from the can...
I also have an antique can of Kurtz & Partners..
its really sweet...and its already tinted...
I use it on special jobs....
There is a 1/2 pint of Heinz size in my collection of junk as well....never tried it ...

Currently using the antique Heins' (2 cans on the farthest right and the 3rd from the left) with flawless performance. I use screw eyes and keep any extra air out.

I too never like LeFranc, it took way too long to set up in my area. I just bought some Rolco fast from Art Essentials and he commented on how it was available again. I've used both the slow and the fast, very consistant stuff. I've also had good results with the Luco brand, although all I've ever used was the fast.
