Between a Sign Shop and Studio? Is it Ego? lol
When I go to my Sign Business I refer to it as a Shop... But I don't know what to call my little place that I use for Airbrushing, and it is located in my Back Yard... Air Brush Studio sounds so weird to me.. all it is is a little 14ftx18ft Shed as they call them here....

I figure a "shop" is where the work gets done and a "studio" is where the creative thinking occurs?
Since I haven't done any of either for a few years, the line of distinction is becoming fuzzier!!!

We have a workshop and a studio... like Dave says the distinction is the type of work being done - although a lot of creative work is done in the shop too.

Yea I was thinking about that just now on my "Commute" or "Drive" into my "Studio" oops, er "Shop" I guess "Studio" just sounds so much more sophisticated than "Shop"... so if we Call our place of Business a Studio we should Charge more... I agree with that!

I have a "shop" it is where my screenprinting equipment gets worked... I also have a "studio" that is set up more to do drawing, painting, cartooning, etc.... it is a much friendlier place because it is where the "magic" happens!!

I'm glad you asked the question Neil! I had someone ask to see my "studio", and immediately I said, "I don't have a studio, it's a shop." But, my office isn't really an office, it's kind of a office-slash-studio, 'cause I have a drafting table in it, and I use it for fine detail work and creative artistic work as well as small office, and it does have good light - like a studio. My shop is in my cave like basement, my office/studio is an upstairs small room, so they are separated. Man, I wish I had a shed in my backyard like you Neil - then I could have it all in one area (and no staircases)!

studio n studio [ˈstjuːdiəu] 1 the workroom of an artist or photographer. 2 (often plural) a place in which cinema films are made. This film was made at Ramrod Studios. 3 a room from which radio or television programs are broadcast, a television studio.
shop n. 1. also shoppe A small retail store or a specialty department in a large store. 2. An atelier; a studio. 3. A place for manufacturing or repairing goods or machinery. 4. A commercial or industrial establishment: a printing shop. 5. A business establishment; an office or a center of activity. 6. A home workshop. 7. a. A schoolroom fitted with machinery and tools for instruction in industrial arts. b. The industrial arts as a technical science or course of study.
So that made things as clear as muddy water. So I guess it is a studio or a shop depending on what you are doing there at the moment.

Old boss used to say a shop was where customers came to argue that prices were too high....a studio is where they went expecting them to be high.

Around here, a shop is where you go to work on things and a studio is where you go to have your picture taken.
