was nasty here all labor day weekend so we decided to play in the clay. got the small skutt kiln loaded sunday nite bout 10-11 pm. ran it on low temp for an hour, then closed the lid and kicked it to high. checked electric meter before i started it so i could see how much power the kiln consumes. 14 KW, not bad at all. it run from midnite till 8-9 am, when it hit 1650 degrees and melted the 010 cone in the kiln sitter. this shuts it off when temp is reached. went out there 10 am, it was already starting to cool, i cracked the lid about a 1/2 inch and let it sit till 6 pm. this was hennies 1st kiln opening ever. sorta like christmas, ever time you do this. no idea of what your gona get))))). all the small squares are for testing glazes. this way i can know what a glaze will look like at different cone temps. these i will fire in the bead kiln, as i want to do different temps. gota get some stuff made for chrismas presents. each pic is a "shelf." did 3 shelves and the bottom. 14 kw at about 90 cents each hour for 8 hours.. about $9 bux to run that kiln.

i worked at a "historical recreation park" one summer as the resident potter. time period for this place was mid to late 1800's. blacksmiths, wagon wheelwright, cooking, candle making etc were ongoing on sat/sundays as people would walk thru and watch. i had a potters shop, with a monster kick wheel, and they had built a cantenary arch "walk in" brick kiln. i made stuff all summer long then when i hadenough to load that kiln, i had a freind come in and set up propane tanks, and got it fired. supposed to run it on low heat for 4-8 hours...welll he couldnt wait........bout 3 hours in at heating temp he decided to go full temp..........the next sound we heard was each piece EXPOLODING!!!!! what didnt explode got busted from those that did.
