I'm sorry this has taken so long. We got buried under a ton of work by two of my largest clients all at once.
Anyhow, here we go.....
Steve is using the torch to burn off the soft wood.
After using a soft wire brush to remove the charred pulp, we got a nice aged texture.
On to the tavern....
The logo was "hand-carved" using a rasp and sandpaper. The raised bevel is imperfect on purpose. The idea was to make the sign look like it had been there for decades and abused.

Brian, we painted over it with an oil-based primer and paint.
When we started the burning process, it was strictly for getting the raised grain effect. After cleaning off the char with the wire brush, I was amazed at how beautiful the wood looked. I was seriously considering using a clear but clears don't hold up very well in this area.

Thanks Joe! I had no idea. After seeing those pictures you linked, I think I know what I'm going to do to the wood fence I'll be putting up at my house before long. Very cool stuff!

That really looks good, Glenn. I've done a similar effect on wood with a very light sandblasting but next time, I'll torch it. I'm half pyro, anyway.
