Well . . . except for border work by the always consistent Joe Marshall, I painted this one also in its entirety.
I did this pictorial tribute to the county fair in Morrison in about 60 hours - 39 for the pictorial - 21 for that doggone 'Fair handbill' - that included brush cleanup and mixing of colors. That little pictorial of the cars parked on the handbill took 8 hours and I was spent when done . . . measure 30" x 30" roughly . . .
Number 19 will be in Oswego, IL - a tribute to a the Boy Scouts and their installation of 3,300 LH markers along the entire length of the road back in 1925 . . .

Great work there Jay. That is one of the best usages of Atkinson's French condensed I've seen. Love the vertical format within the edge marquees. All of that text in the border is crazy. May I ask what you are getting for one of those. If that is too crass of a question and you'd like to answer privately by all means suit yourself, that is if you care to answer all either way it's all good. Please keep posting this wonderful projects progress.

What I especially like is how you've maintained a nice sense of "style" and continuity throughout the whole series. It's much like viewing a book where the style of illustration lends credence and reinforcement to the story that's unfolding. Great work !!!

You know . . . I'm reallyy feeling the love here . . . <insert David Butler style 'aw shucks' here> Thank you very much for the humbling remarks.
But to Jack's comment: "Grasshopper" - the old Kung Fu series term to describe the 'student'
Yep . . . I can assure you, while I am most pleased about these comments, I can attest to the fact that I truly am a beginner. This is my 4th pictorial so I really am a 'grasshopper'.
And I will tell you all the secret . . . William F. Hueg III
Someday, this man - who has one of the purest artist's hearts I know - will be recognized not only for his amazing talents - but his ability to teach effectively and raising you above even your own expectations.
From design to colors to pictorials . . . you cannot imagine the benefits of working closely with him over the last 20 years we've known each other. This project has his 'fingerprint' all over it and I couldn't be more thankful for that single thing.
Mentors. The Hueg's - the Riedel's - the Wills' - etc.
Jack knows how I picked his brain over the years . . . those who walk before us have the key to an easier life ahead of us . . . information. Just listen. (This is the part where you all laugh because those that know me wonder if I ever do listen . . . yep. I sure do. Then I keep talking . . . heehee)
I'll pass the gist if these wonderful comments along to 'Professor Hueg' . . .

Bob Sauls and Preston . . . it's probably public information so no need for me to be secretive.
Originally supposed to be a series of 40 murals - but reduced to 33 now with some communities unable to respond adequately to the requirements of allowing them to be placed on their walls . . . and each one priced at $10,000 per mural - bid/contract in May 2008 . . .
If I bid it today knowing all the facts and issues, I'd make that $13-$15K . . .
Federal Byways grant for 80% and state tourism grant for 20% . . .

Truly impressive, way beyond awesome or any other words to describe the talent it took to do this indeed. Bill Hueg was most talented, inspiring and most helpful even in school still the same is great to hear.

Wow Jay! What a great concept! Historical murals connecting cities through rural America linking them back together before highways took over. In our travels, there are so many great walls begging for a mural or refreshing a ghost sign. It's a big job to put it all in place but as we know, the easy part is painting it.
Glad to hear you're expanding your skill set, see... you CAN teach an ol' Walldog new trix!
Thanks for sharing! Debbie

Sonny . . . well, I guess I went outside my comfort zone??!! The piece I painted of Sawtzk'ehs granddaughter was a first for me - though it was posterized. When Hueg had to leave this project he gave me a few 'pointers' . . .
Like your Dad tossing you in the lake to swim it was drown - or save yourself. I guess I can do something I didn't think I could do . . . but I still say it was Bill Hueg's confidence building lessons. Still much to learn and I fear I'd botch a color mural. Monochromatic is much easier.
A lesson to all . . . step outside your comfort zone.
Debbie - yep - apparently you can teach an old Dog new tricks. Ray Guzman said he saw Andy and your son in NYC - Had no clue your son played soccer for Manchester United . . . That is just truly impressive!!
@ Neil - Dibond panels - 4' x 10's - artists oils - ClearStar clearcoat . . .

Sorry Jay but we can't give him credit for playing for ManU... Andy's son, Jamie attended Marshall on a soccer scholarship & played for many years but was never with a major team. Jamie's friend's dad is the goalie coach for ManU so they were able to go to the game in NJ. As long as they were there, Andy looked up Ray to say hi but it was a very short visit.
Keep up the good work on the pictorials which is where my strengths lay... you're doing a really good job. With your skills & eye for the arts, you'll have it mastered in no time. My weak area is definitely lettering but I've gained alot of great tips & tricks hanging around ya'll.
I would love to see your final portrait of Dan's granddghtr!

Ray seemed to have gotten his details a tad mixed up. Either way, very cool for them to be able to go. ManU is the NY Yankees of GB soccer.
Here's the post where Dan posted pictures of the painting I did for him - and the original photo I worked from. I applied some filters to take out some highlights so I could 'dumb it down' for easy conversion to posterization . . . and then painted it. My first portrait/pictorial - but 'cheating' by doing it posterized.
